Introduction
Once of the most insidious sins afflicting the world is the sin of pride - a sin which God hates
To be proud is to have an irregular, abnormal, skewed view of self in relation to God
As C.J. Mahaney says: pride is to contend with God for ultimate supremacy - which is what satan did. In a prophecy to the king of Babylon in Isaiah 14, we hear these words which describe satan’s sin - pride.
Isaiah 14:12-15 ““How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations! “But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ “Nevertheless you will be brought down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit.”
Pride ferments rebellion, discontent, self will - pride is to fight against God for supremacy of anything - which is what Adam and Eve did in the garden. Pride is literally the root of all sin:
Genesis 3.6 “Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, so she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.”
And that problem of pride continues until today. Pride is not just the problem of the jet setting billionaires and gaudy celebrities. No, pride is the problem of the whole world and even in the church. We are all trying to take from God what is rightfully His, ultimate supremacy over what is His.
Pride is at the root of contention, disunity, ungratefulness and rebellion. Pride is behind self-pity, grumbling and idolatry. Make no mistake pride is a problem we all deal with.
Pride is insidious because pride sets itself in opposition to God for ultimate supremacy of everything - which is a problem for God because He owns everything.
Because of this it should not surprise us that the Bible tells us that God hates pride
In James 4:6 James quotes from the Psalm 138 “But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.””
That is the main point that I am trying to get across in today’s sermon.
Main Point
God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
God gives unmerited favor, or grace to those who have a right understanding of Him and do not contend with Him for supremacy over their life. For those that do fight with God over supremacy in their life God is opposed or against them.
The main point is this: God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. BREAK/PAUSE
Road Map
As you no doubt recall we are in the second year of three year trip through the Bible - Last year we went through the historical narratives in Genesis through Esther and so far this year we have gone through the Wisdom genre and now we are looking to the prophets - and we will be going through them in chronological order. Next year we will look at the New Testament.
Today we are going to be looking at the book of Obadiah - the shortest book in the Old Testament and likely the oldest book in the prophetic genre and over the balance of the year we will migrate up and through prophets both Major and Minor all the way up to Malachi.
But for today we will be in Obadiah. In this book we are going to look at the arrogance of the nation of Edom. The nation of Edom descended from Esau, Jacob’s older brother. In Obadiah we will see Edom’s hostility toward Israel and God’s judgment on them. But before I go any further, let’s dedicate this time to the Lord. Let’s pray. LIFT HANDS 1 Tim 2.8.
Prayer
Yahweh God, this time is Yours. Our lives are Yours. All things that we can see are Yours. You alone retain dominion, power and sovereignty over everyone and everything at all times. PAUSE Yahweh, we must confess that we do not always believe this. The world tells us that we are the captain of our own fate and the master of our destiny. The world, the flesh, and the devil have colluded to deceive us into believing that we are in charge, to follow our hearts, our dreams... but we see in Your word how deceptive that is.
You alone are supreme. You alone deserve all glory and we are sorry that we have usurped that which only belongs to You. Forgive us our pride and arrogance. Remove from us our contention and disunity. Remove from us the penalty due our sin. We agree with You that it is sin, deserving of punishment. Grant that we might be cleansed by the perfect blood of Christ. Restore right understanding as well as right standing before You. Yahweh, give grace to us please. We desire Your unmerited favor and not Your opposition.
May it be that we no longer set ourselves up against You but that You truly be our Lord and Master in all things. We dedicate this time to You and Your glory today. It is in Christ’s name I pray, amen.
Clarification
Because this prophecy is intended for Edom and Israel and not the church in 21st century America we are going to approach this book a bit differently. This prophecy is not geared toward us and we can get confused if we think wrongly about it. To be sure 2 Tim 3.16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness,” but hijacking it can send us down the wrong track. We need to understand that the prophecy in Obadiah was not written to us - it was written to Jacob and Esau’s descendants. Be that as it may, there are things which are absolutely applicable to us which I alluded to in the introduction, mainly pride. Obadiah gives us great insight into how God looks at pride, a problem not unique to Edom but to all of humanity. We are going to see what pride develops into and how God responds to pride.
To that end we are going to look at the context of Obadiah and then I will read through the book. I will call out several principles that are applicable to us and explain some of the unique situation presented and then we will look at how to develop humility in our lives; humility being the opposite of the pride exhibited by Edom and then I will close by looking at the humility of Christ in Mark 10:35-45.
Context
So here is the context of Obadiah. This prophecy was written to the descendents of Jacob and Esau which became Israel and Edom. Esau, who as you will remember in Genesis 25 disdained his birthright for a bowl of lentil soup and sold it to Jacob. Later in Genesis 27 at the command of his mother Rebekah, Jacob deceived his father and disguising himself as Esau and stole the blessing reserved for the firstborn. Esau was grieved over this and threatened to kill Jacob. Jacob was sent to live with his relatives and he remained with them over the course of a couple of decades and ultimately reunited and reconciled with Esau in Genesis 33.
Although these two, Jacob and Esau, reconciled there are precious few indications that there was anything but hostility between their descendents in the years to come. If you will remember Jacob’s family ended up moving to Egypt to escape the famine and Esau’s family moved to a truly desolate region in the wilderness south of the Dead Sea.
When the Lord, through Moses freed the Israelites from slavery to Egypt 430 years later they were forbidden from taking the land of Edom. God warned Israel in Deuteronomy 2.4-5 to be careful and conscientious in interacting with Edom.“and command the people, saying, “You are going to pass through the territory of your brothers the sons of Esau who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So be very careful; do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, even as little as a footstep because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.”
But we also see that Edom was incredibly inhospitable to Israel in Numbers 20. Moses asked if they could pass through Edom and even asked if they could pay for water to drink but Edom threatened them. It says in Numbers 20.20 “But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out to meet him with a heavy force and with a strong hand.”
And so it continued over time. Throughout Israel’s history we see war campaigns between Israel and Edom and it seems like the relationship was nearly always sour, which I believe can be traced - as nearly all sin can, back to the root issue of pride.
Today we are going to see what Edom’s pride brought them to and how they mistreated Israel. We are going to see how God regards their pride and the justice that is due to those who are proud. We are going to see Israel saved and Edom destroyed and the Lord given all the glory.
If you have your Bibles please open them to the book of Obadiah. Obadiah can be hard to spot but it is between Amos and Jonah.
Our text is broken into four points - the first being the Deceitfulness of Pride
I). The Deceitfulness of Edom’s Pride (v1-4)
1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus says Lord Yahweh concerning Edom— We (THIS IS ISRAEL) have heard a report from Yahweh, And an envoy has been sent among the nations saying, “Arise! And let us arise against her for battle”— 2 “Behold, I will make you small among the nations; You are greatly despised. 3 “The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who dwell in the clefts of the cliff, In the height of your habitation, Who says in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to earth?’ 4 “Though you build loftily like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down,” declares Yahweh.
Edom was deceived. They believed that they were untouchable because of the location where they lived. If you ever get a chance to look up that region south of the Dead Sea look it up. It is fascinating geologically. Edom lived in one of the most desolate regions on the planet and furthermore they had built their strongholds high up in the rocky cliffs. For all intents and purposes they were untouchable - they thought. I mentioned in the introduction how satan vaunted himself against God, lifting up himself against God, which is exactly what Edom is doing here.
Because they are proud, because they are haughty, because they are arrogant God says He opposes them, He will bring them down. They are deceived because they think that they are powerful when they are not.
Friends, that is the danger of the deceitfulness of pride. It blinds us, it deludes us. Proverbs 18.11 says “A rich man’s wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his own delusion.”
Pride deceives and Edom is self deceived, her own arrogance deceived her and because of that God will bring her down.
What’s the main point? God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble
In verses 5-10 we have our second point - a complete destruction
II). Edom’s Complete Destruction (v5-10)
5 “If thieves came to you, If robbers by night— Oh how you will be ruined!— Would they not thieve only until they had enough? If grape gatherers came to you, Would they not allow some gleanings to remain? 6 “Oh how Esau will be searched out And his hidden treasures ransacked! 7 “All the men who have a covenant with you Will send you forth to the border, And the men at peace with you Will deceive you and overpower you. They who eat your bread Will set an ambush for you. (There is no discernment in him.) 8 “Will I not on that day,” declares Yahweh, “Cause the wise men to perish from Edom And discernment from the mountain of Esau? 9 “Then your mighty men will be dismayed, O Teman, So that each one may be cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter. 10 “Because of violence to your brother Jacob, You will be covered with shame, And you will be cut off forever.
When thieves break into a home how much do they take? Well they don’t take everything - only what they think is valuable right. When a field is harvested, there are always a few bits of produce that are left behind. There is always a little left behind in both these cases… Not so with Edom. Edom will be completely scraped off the map and the ones that will do it will be their friends. The ones that they had made bargains with, made promises with will deceive them and take everything thing from them.
What’s ironic is that Edom was world renowned for their wisdom, Eliphaz the Temanite and Job both hailed from Edom. But Edom was so blinded by their pride that they didn’t realize that they had become foolish. That is what happens when people, when the creature usurps the Creator. Because God is opposed to the proud He is going to cut off Edom, because Edom had acted with hostility against Jacob they will be humiliated and cut-off.
Just real quickly, to be cut off in the Biblical sense is to be cut out of covenant, to be removed from safety, to be killed off or exterminated. Edom is going to be cut off forever… Why? Our third point tells us why - verses 11-14 are titled Edom’s Arrogance
III). Edom’s Arrogance (v11-14)
11On the day that you stood aloof, On the day that strangers took his wealth captive And foreigners entered his gate And cast lots for Jerusalem— You too were as one of them. 12 “Now do not look on your brother’s day with triumph, The day of his misfortune. And do not be glad over the sons of Judah In the day when they perish; And do not let your mouth speak great things In the day of their distress. 13Do not enter the gate of My people In the day of their disaster. Indeed, you, do not look on their calamity with triumph In the day of their disaster. And do not send out for their wealth In the day of their disaster. 14Do not stand at the fork of the road To cut down those among them who escape; And do not deliver over their survivors In the day of their distress.
In verses we see the arrogance of Edom. Their pride, kept them from aiding their brother Israel and when foreigners attacked them. Indeed their wicked pride drove them to participate. It was their pride that made them glad, it was their pride that made them boast over Israel. It was their pride that made them take possession of whatever they could and to look with haughty self satisfaction over Israel. It was Edom’s arrogance that drove them to plunder and to cut down Israel’s escapees and sell off survivors as slaves.
Edom’s arrogance made them inhospitable and inhospitality is a sure sign of arrogant pride.
Hospitality in the Bible communicates more than just being friendly and inviting a friend in for a meal. In the Bible hospitality was a must. It is so important that it is a requirement of the elders in a church that they be hospitable (Titus 1.8, 1 Timothy 3.2).
Hospitality is a warm and humble greeting to strangers. An invitation to enjoy refreshment to strangers. It is a provision of food and drink and have conversation. Hospitality is an extension of security to those who do not have it. Hospitality is to care for the poor and the destitute - not just friends. Edom had none of this for their sister nation Israel. I wonder if we do? Are we welcoming to those who cannot repay?
Jesus said in Luke 14.12-14 “And He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and that will be your repayment. “But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for it will be repaid to you at the resurrection of the righteous.””
Hospitality is critical in the life of the Christian and needs to be actively cultivated.
In our last section - verses 15-21 our attention is turned from Edom to Israel’s redemption in the Day of Yahweh.
IV). The Day of Yahweh (v15-21)
15 “For the day of Yahweh draws near on all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you. Your dealings will return on your own head. 16 “Because just as you all drank on My holy mountain, All the nations will drink continually. They will drink and swallow, And they will be as if they never were. 17 “But on Mount Zion there will be those who escape, And it will be holy. And the house of Jacob will possess their possessions. 18 “Then the house of Jacob will be a fire And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau will be as stubble. And they will set them on fire and consume them So that there will be no survivor of the house of Esau,” For Yahweh has spoken. 19 Then those of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, And those of the Shephelah, the Philistine plain; And they will possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, And Benjamin will possess Gilead. 20 And the exiles of this military force of the sons of Israel, Who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad, Will possess the cities of the Negev. 21 And the saviors will ascend Mount Zion To judge the mountain of Esau, And the kingdom will belong to Yahweh.
I said it before I began in the context but the Church is not Israel. Israel is Israel and Israel will be the means of Edom’s destruction in the day of the Lord. Israel will possess the Promised Land. Edom will be judged, just as all the nations will be judged. Their iniquity will rest on their own heads and they will be punished. Sometimes Christians get confused and mix up the Rapture and the Second Coming of Christ. We hear the words, “The Day of Yahweh” and we think it means one thing when it means another. The “Day of Yahweh” is a day of cataclysmic judgment. It is a day when the Church has already been raptured.
There is great danger in the Day of the Lord for all who are not found in Christ. Amos 5:18–20 “Woe, you who are longing for the day of Yahweh, For what purpose will the day of Yahweh be to you? It will be darkness and not light; As when a man flees from a lion And a bear meets him; Or he goes home, leans his hand against the wall, And a snake bites him. Will not the day of Yahweh be darkness instead of light, Even thick darkness with no brightness in it?”
In the “Day of Yahweh” there will finally be perfect justice and no one will escape.
Friends let me just mention this as clearly as I can. We are convicted of our pride and self will, we are convicted of placing ourselves as god and exerting our own supremacy at the cost of God’s. God has told us clearly that He opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. That grace is given through Jesus Christ. If we attempt to stand in opposition to God as did satan, as did Adam and Eve, as did the generation of Noah and every generation since we will incur condemnation, judgment. Unless we are found in Christ we have every reason to be afraid but if we are found in Christ we have every reason to boast in His righteousness.
Jeremiah 9.23-24 “Thus says Yahweh, “Let not a wise man boast in his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast in his might; let not a rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am Yahweh who shows lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares Yahweh.”
Oh friends, please come to Jesus. Forsake self will, arrogance. Submit all things and every part of your life to serving Him alone.
Well how do we do that? How do we serve Him? How do we abandon pride and actively war against it. Here is a little acrostic that may be of assistance. The Acrostic is HUMBLE. In our war against pride we must be HUMBLE
Application: How to war against Pride
Hope in Christ’s Cross work alone (Galatians 6:14 “But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” )
Understand our own depravity and desperate need (Romans 7.24-25b “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord…)
Make it a point to thank God for everything (1 Thess 5.18 “in everything give thanks, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” ). When we are grateful we have a mindset which is counterproductive to pride. If you are to war against pride you must be grateful to God for all things, including hardship.
Build Spiritual Disciplines, fasting - Controlled weakness, Christ centered fellowship and prayer, Bible memorization (Matt 6.16-17 ““Now whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. “But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face” 1 Thess 5.17 “pray without ceasing;” Psalm 119.11 “Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.” )
Look to God’s word alone (John 17.17 ““Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” ) Is self pity a problem in your life, look to Scripture. Is grumbling a problem in your life, look to Scripture. Is self-sufficiency, or inhospitality, or rebellion a problem you will only see the solution in Scripture. Don’t look to self help books to psychologize your problem and blame everything and everyone else. No, look to Scripture - it is true.
Everyday acknowledge need (John 15.5 ““I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” )
Oh Christian, when we begin to see our own desperate need for everything that is when we will see God working through us. If we can muscle our own righteousness like the arrogant pharisees we will never depend on the Cross work of Christ. We will insist on our own merit, our own good works and lose out on the perfection of Christ.
Let’s look to Christ now in closing - turn to Mark 10 with me.
Conclusion
Pride and arrogance can make us incredibly blind, as Edom was. It can make us hostile, angry and entitled. These are all things that God is opposed to but He gives grace to the humble. In Mark 10:35 we see this play out.
Mark 10:35–45 | 35 Then James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, (THESE ARE THE INNER CIRCLE OF JESUS) came up to Jesus, saying to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” (DO YOU SEE THAT VYING FOR ULTIMATE SUPREMACY OVER GOD?) 36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37 And they said to Him, “Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” (THE AUDACITY OF THIS REQUEST JUST SHOWS HOW MUCH THEY DIDNT KNOW ABOUT CHRIST AND WHAT HE WAS INTENDING TO DO)
38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. 40 “But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John. (APPARENTLY, AND OTHER TEXTS SUGGEST THIS, THIS IDEA OF SUPREMACY AND HEADSHIP WAS SOMETHING THAT THE DISCIPLES REGULARLY SCRAPPED OVER BUT CHRIST SAYS THAT THOSE THAT ARE TRULY GREAT DO NOT ACT THIS WAY. THEY SERVE)
42 And calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them. 43 “But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Friend, do you know Christ? Is He your only Lord? Does He tell you what to do through His Word and do you obey Him? Are you actively serving Christ in all things. If you are like me it is a constant struggle to submit all things to Christ. When I am tired, unmotivated, entitled I find it very difficult to do what Christ has called me to do. I want what I want but that is not what God wants. God is opposed to those who are self-sufficient and proud. But He gives grace to the humble. Today we must walk away with a firm grasp that we are incredibly needy and when we get this then God will work through us and He will get the glory He alone deserves. Let’s pray.
Context
Jacob and Esau
Twins
Separated by deceit, wrath, geography, favoritism, time, lifestyle (marriage, obedience to parents)
Reconciled
Esau
Inhospitable Numbers 20:14–22 .
Forfeited his birthright Genesis 25:27–34 .
Hairy Genesis 25:25 “And the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.”
Scared of Israel - refused passage
Numbers 20:14-22 14 From Kadesh Moses then sent messengers to the king of Edom: “Thus your brother Israel has said, ‘You know all the hardship that has befallen us, 15 that our fathers went down to Egypt, and we stayed in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians treated us and our fathers badly. 16 ‘So we cried out to Yahweh, and He heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out from Egypt; now behold, we are at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory. 17 ‘Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or through vineyard; we will not even drink water from a well. We will go along the king’s highway; we will not turn to the right or to the left until we pass through your territory.’” 18 Edom, however, said to him, “You shall not pass through us, lest I come out to meet you with the sword.” 19 Again, the sons of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, and if I and my livestock do drink any of your water, then I will pay its price. Let me only pass through on my feet, nothing else.” 20 But he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out to meet him with a heavy force and with a strong hand. 21 Thus Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through his territory; so Israel turned away from him. 22 Then they set out from Kadesh, and the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor.
Balaam had prophesied that Edom would be a possession of Israel
Numbers 24:18 ““And Edom shall be a possession, Seir, its enemies, also will be a possession, While Israel performs valiantly.”
After Kadesh Barneia when Israel had refused to enter the promised land they circled Mount Seir - Edom for “Many days
Deuteronomy 2:1–8 | 1 “Then we turned and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as Yahweh spoke to me, and circled Mount Seir for many days. 2 “And Yahweh spoke to me, saying, 3 ‘You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north, 4 and command the people, saying, “You are going to pass through the territory of your brothers the sons of Esau who live in Seir; and they will be afraid of you. So be very careful; 5 do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, even as little as a footstep because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession. 6 “You shall buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you shall also bargain with them for water with money so that you may drink. 7 “For Yahweh your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand; He has known your wanderings through this great wilderness. These forty years Yahweh your God has been with you; you have not lacked a thing.”’ 8 “So we passed beyond our brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the Arabah road, away from Elath and from Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed through by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
Hostile to each other
Saul had campaigned against Edom in his zeal to establish the kingdom 1 Sam 14.47 “Now Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, and he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, the sons of Ammon, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines; and wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment.”
Joab, David’s general campaigned and killed every male in 1 Kings 11.15-16 “Now it happened that when David was in Edom, and Joab the commander of the army had gone up to bury the slain, and had struck down every male in Edom (for Joab and all Israel stayed there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom),” 1 Chronicles 18.11-13 “King David also set these apart as holy to Yahweh with the silver and the gold which he had carried away from all the nations: from Edom, Moab, the sons of Ammon, the Philistines, and from Amalek. Moreover, Abishai the son of Zeruiah smote 18,000 of Edom in the Valley of Salt. Then he placed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became servants to David. And Yahweh granted salvation to David wherever he went.”
David set up garrisons in Edom and made them forced laborers 2 Sam 8.14 “Then he placed garrisons in Edom. In all Edom he placed garrisons, and all the Edomites became servants to David. And Yahweh granted salvation to David wherever he went.” Psalm 60 and Psalm 83 and Psalm 108 .
After Solomon had turned away from the Lord God sent an adversary who was of the royal lineage of Esau who opposed Solomon 1 Kings 11:14–22 | 14 Then Yahweh raised up an adversary to Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he was of the seed of the king in Edom. 15 Now it happened that when David was in Edom, and Joab the commander of the army had gone up to bury the slain, and had struck down every male in Edom 16 (for Joab and all Israel stayed there six months, until he had cut off every male in Edom), 17 that Hadad fled to Egypt, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him, while Hadad was a young boy. 18 Then they arose from Midian and came to Paran; and they took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt. And he gave him a house and assigned him food and gave him land. 19 And Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh. So he gave him as a wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen. 20 And the sister of Tahpenes bore his son Genubath. And Tahpenes weaned him in Pharaoh’s house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh’s house among the sons of Pharaoh. 21 But Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers and that Joab the commander of the army had died. So Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Send me away, that I may go to my own country.” 22 Then Pharaoh said to him, “But what have you lacked with me, that behold, you are seeking to go to your own country?” And he answered, “Nothing; nevertheless you must surely let me go.”
Seven generations after David during the time of Jehoshaphat Edom had not recovered - their was a deputy over Edom 1 Kings 22.47 “Now there was no king in Edom; a deputy was king.”
Israel and Judah formed an alliance in the days of Jehoram with Edom 2 Kings 3.9So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom; and they went around on a seven days’ journey, and there was no water for the camp or for the cattle that followed them.”
After this Edom revolted against Judah and made a king for themselves 2 Kings 8.20-22 “In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah and made a king over themselves. Then Joram crossed over to Zair, and all his chariots with him. And he arose by night and struck the Edomites who were surrounding him and the commanders of the chariots; but his army fled to their tents. So Edom revolted against Judah to this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time.”
After Obadiah’s time Amaziah worshipped the gods of the edomites whom he had defeated 2 Chronicles 25:14Now it happened that after Amaziah came from striking down the Edomites, he brought the gods of the sons of Seir, set them up as his gods, worshiped them, and burned incense to them.”
Isaiah 11 (the remant will remain and rule over them), Isaiah 34 (Yahweh’s wrath against the nations), Isaiah 63 (the Return of Yahweh)
After the Exile in 586 Psalm 137 .
Destruction by the hand of Judah Ezekiel 25.12-14 “‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “Because Edom has acted against the house of Judah by taking vengeance and has incurred grievous guilt and avenged themselves upon them,” therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, “I will also stretch out My hand against Edom and cut off man and beast from it. And I will lay it waste; from Teman even to Dedan they will fall by the sword. “I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel. Therefore, they will act in Edom according to My anger and according to My wrath; thus they will know My vengeance,” declares Lord Yahweh.”
