Add to your Faith – Patience
Intro: Keeping focused on our theme for this year of “adding to our faith” we are continuing to establish and build upon our foundation of salvation. If you remember we are building our house of wisdom. Proverbs 9:1 ” Wisdom hath builded her house, She hath hewn out her seven pillars:” Those seven pillars are represented here by our seven additions to our faith.
Today we are going to look at adding to our faith our 4th pillar. The pillar of patience.
The Old Testament: The word patience is used 3 times.
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him:
Fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way,
Because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
I waited patiently for the Lord;
And he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay,
And set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter. Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive. Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
The New Testament: Patience is living the Christian life despite difficult circumstances because of hope!
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.
I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Obstacles:
Personal Sin -
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Failure of other believers-
Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
Persecution-
So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:
Materialism-
Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
Delay of the Second Coming of Christ-
And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.
How do we build Patience?
If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away,
And let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.
The house of the wicked shall be overthrown:
But the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.
And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake. But there shall not an hair of your head perish. In your patience possess ye your souls.
How do we know we have Patience?
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
(Easy to be intreated) A willingness to yield or to be reasonable.
The Result of adding Patience.
Our communication will change!
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
I intreated thy favour with my whole heart:
Be merciful unto me according to thy word.
And the Lord shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it:
And they shall return even to the Lord, and he shall be intreated of them, and shall heal them.
