16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for on the day that you eat from it you will certainly die.”
Genesis 3:6–7 NASB 2020
6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings.

Title - The Doctrine of the Fall of Man: The Sin Committed in the Garden

Series - Genesis: The Foundation of Biblical Doctrines

Key Issues

what can Genesis tell us about sin and evil?
what was the first sin committed by man?
what is the original sin?

Main Subject

Genesis will show us that the sinful condition of humanity can be traced back to the very first humans that ever lived.
The doctrine of the fall of man teaches that humanity’s sinful condition was the result of the sin that was first committed in the garden of Eden.

The origin of evil

Evil was already present in the Garden of Eden

Genesis 2:9 NASB 2020
9 Out of the ground the Lord God caused every tree to grow that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
When God created a place for the first humans, evil began to appear also
Evil, therefore, preceded man.
Genesis does not tells us anything about the origin of evil, but other books do -
Ezekiel 28:12–16 NASB 2020
12 “Son of man, take up a song of mourning over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “You had the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 “You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The ruby, the topaz and the diamond; The beryl, the onyx and the jasper; The lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald; And the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets, Was in you. On the day that you were created They were prepared. 14 “You were the anointed cherub who covers, And I placed you there. You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 “You were blameless in your ways From the day you were created Until unrighteousness was found in you. 16 “By the abundance of your trade You were internally filled with violence, And you sinned; Therefore I have cast you as profane From the mountain of God. And I have destroyed you, you covering cherub, From the midst of the stones of fire.
the prophecy was against the proud king of Tyre
but the prophecy also reveals the spirit behind his pride - Satan
he was originally an cherub
he was created perfect in beauty and full of wisdom
he was in Eden, the garden of God
he was decked with all the precious stones
he was in the mountain of God
he was blameless until “unrighteousness” was found in him
Isaiah 14:12–15 NASB 2020
12 “How you have fallen from heaven, You star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who defeated the nations! 13 “But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. 14 ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ 15 “Nevertheless you will be brought down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit.
the prophecy was a pronouncement against the king of Babylon
but the pronouncement also revealed the spirit behind him - Satan
he was Helel (Heb) - Shining One
he was a son of the dawn - born/created at the beginning of time
he was cut down because of his pride
“I will ascend to heaven”
“I will raise my throne above the stars of God”
“I will sit on the mount of assembly”
“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds”
“I will make myself like the Most High”
Long before man was created the Shining One, the “anointed cherub that covers”, has already rebelled against God
of all God’s creation, he was the first to commit sin and rebel against God
he was the one who created evil, which he brought into humanity
“Evil” is the result of sin
evil is the corruption that results in disobeying God the Creator
Ezekiel 28:15 NLT
15 “You were blameless in all you did from the day you were created until the day evil was found in you.

The nature of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil

Genesis 2:16–17
16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for on the day that you eat from it you will certainly die.”
It was not a “natural tree”
the fruits from the natural trees are allowed to be eaten
the natural trees were created and therefore good
It was in the “midst of the garden” - just like the tree of life
“in the midst” - indicates ‘present’, ‘active’ and ‘available’
God knew man will soon encounter its presence!
It was identified by God
contrary to what the serpent would say later, God was not hiding anything from man
it will cause man to be aware of the presence of evil alongside the good
it will cause man to be contaminated with evil!
Genesis 2:16–17 NASB 2020
16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for on the day that you eat from it you will certainly die.”
It was forbidden
it will destroy man - he will die!
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil symbolizes the kind life or existence in which man will come to know the presence of evil, suffer its effects alongside the good, and finally succumb to death as its penalty.
It is a life outside of the will of God
It is a life of sin
It is a life of corruption

The first sin committed

The first sin committed in the garden was not simply eating a fruit of a tree, but a despicable act of sexual intercourse that happened between the serpent and the woman, which resulted in the curses that were passed on to all generations.

Why the first committed sin was more than eating a fruit

Because the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was not a natural tree
“tree” - symbolizes “life” or “existence”
wisdom is a tree of life - Prov 3.18
Proverbs 3:18 NASB 2020
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy are those who hold on to her.
a person who lives by the law of God is like a tree - Ps 1.2-3
Psalm 1:2–3 NASB 2020
2 But his delight is in the Law of the Lord, And on His Law he meditates day and night. 3 He will be like a tree planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season, And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
Because of the immediate results of the sinful act -
it opened their eyes to their nakedness - prior to the act, they were not ashamed - Genesis 2.25
Genesis 2:25 NASB 2020
25 And the man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed.
they hid their private parts hide - Genesis 3.7-10
Genesis 3:7–10 NASB 2020
7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings. 8 Now they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”

The consequences of the first sin committed

The consequences of the first sin committed were the curses that God put those involved.

God cursed the serpent’s body

Genesis 3:11–15 NASB 2020
11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me some of the fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 Then the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all the livestock, And more than any animal of the field; On your belly you shall go, And dust you shall eat All the days of your life; 15 And I will make enemies Of you and the woman, And of your offspring and her Descendant; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise Him on the heel.”
The serpent was cursed to crawl using his body, like a snake
this shows that the serpent was nothing like a snke, despite its name
the serpent was a beast of the field- Gen 3.1
Genesis 3:1 NASB 2020
1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”
The serpent’s seed was cursed together with the woman’s
this indicates that “seeds” were involved in the sinful act
“seed of the woman” - naturally the woman does not produce seed or sperm
but this was a prophetic utterance concerning Christ

God cursed the woman’s body

Genesis 3:16 NASB 2020
16 To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you shall deliver children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.”
Pain will now accompany conception and childbirth
this indicates that the woman’s womb was involved in the sinful act
The woman’s desire was commanded to be subject to her husband only
this indicates that the woman’s sexual appetite was involved in the sinful act

God’s cursed for the man

Genesis 3:17–19 NASB 2020
17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; With hard labor you shall eat from it All the days of your life. 18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; Yet you shall eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face You shall eat bread, Until you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.”
God did not curse the man’s body!
this indicates that his body was not involved in the sinful act
the sinful act was between the serpent and the woman
But man did eat/partake of the tree!
his participation was that he listened to his wife, and received his wife’s offer
after the woman “ate” of the fruit of the tree, she offered the same “experience” to her husband
the sexual act between the man and woman was not sinful because they were husband and wife - BUT IT WAS TAINTED WITH EVIL!
God cursed the ground
this means - earthly existence is from hereon a struggle to survive and delay the penalty of sin - death
“because of you” - all creation will bear the evil effects of Adam’s sin - the corruption

Conclusion

Why did God allow this evil thing to happen to his beautiful creation - the man?
We may not have all the answers, but even Paul had this to say when he was questioned concerning the existence of evil despite the sovereignty God -
Romans 9:22–24 NASB 2020
22 What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with great patience objects of wrath prepared for destruction? 23 And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon objects of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory, 24 namely us, whom He also called, not only from among Jews, but also from among Gentiles,
God could have easily destroyed Satan and his host from the beginning -
But He CHOSE to delay his judgment so that He can MAKE KNOWN the riches of His glory to those OBJECTS of His mercy - His people!
Hence - in the middle of the chaos in the garden God planted a seed of promise -
the seed of the woman that will crush sin and evil - Gen 3.15
Genesis 3:15 NASB 2020
15 And I will make enemies Of you and the woman, And of your offspring and her Descendant; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise Him on the heel.”
