Retreat to Despair (1-5)
Elijah had just won an incredible victory. Fire from heaven proved to the nation that Yaweh is God. The prophets of Baal were put to death (Deut 13:6-10). The rain came in answer to prayer.
Now Jezebel is after him with a vengeance. It is often after a time of great energy spent in work for the Lord that we are tempted with depression.
He had been bold for the Lord now, he is running in fear.
Fear will tell us we are all alone and there is no hope. Ironically, Elijah was running for his life, but now he wants to just die!
