UW: Parts
Intro.:
TS: Let us examine a few different parts of this passage together now.
The characters of the passage. [12-21]
Adam.
Adam is introduced early.
Verse 14 is important to understand. It states that Adam is a type of of the Coming One- the Messiah. What does this mean?
Through him sin came; through him sin spread; through sin that spread, death resulted.
Jesus.
Through Christ, righteousness came; through Christ, righteousness spread; through righteousness that spread, life resulted.
In this sense, Adam is a type- the model so to speak.
The conduct of the characters. [15-17]
NOTE: better wording would be act of trespass/sin; act of righteousness.
Acts of sin.
Different words are used to refer to sin:
sin: comprehensive
transgression/trespass: to go beyond a boundary in an offensive manner.
Acts of grace.
Righteous acts: motivated by grace.
gift of righteousness
APPLICATION: What is the conduct of your life? More reflective of unrighteousness or righteousness?
The consequences of the conduct. [17-21]
The result of death.
Notice in these verse the flow pattern:
Trespass —> death [17a]
Trespass —> condemnation [18b]
Disobedience —> sinners [19b]
Law —> trespass [20a]
Reign of sin —> death [21a]
The result of life.
Grace/righteousness —> life [17b]
righteousness —> justification [18b]
obedience —> righteous [19b]
reign of grace/righteousness —> life
APPLICATION: the two ends are obvious: where sin reigns, death results; where grace reigns, life results.
Takeaways:
