Elijah’s battle.

a. Baal
i. The one thing Baal could not touch was death.
ii. Can your God carry you beyond the grave?
iii. God goes into Ba’al’s backyard, and says, “Can you do this?”

World saviors

i. “This is where all the world’s would-be-saviors fall short.”
ii. So many things in our world promise salvation.
iii. Money, fame, beauty
1. You can slow the aging process down a little bit, but you can’t stop it. You can nipit. Tuck it. Tighten it. Tan it; tweak it; tat it; puff it; twist it; lift it; color it. Whatever. It’s just getting older; saggier; flimsier.
It’s dying.
iv. Have they have conquered our greatest problem, death?

Jesus and the resurrection.

Luke 4:16-30

i. Why did they become so anger?
ii. Jesus passes through their midst.
iii. Jesus is saying you can’t touch me unless I give you permission.

Luke 7:11-17

i. Retracing Elijah’s steps, because Jesus is addressing essentially the same question.
ii. Which God saves?
iii. Can you do this?

God has a bigger agenda

Felt need.

Need One. Hunger

1. Elijah doesn’t fulfill that need.
2. Tells her to obey what he says.
3. Learns to trust what God says.
4. This is her greatest need
5. It’s our greatest need

Need two. Son dies

1. Why would God do this?
2. God has something bigger.

God’s agenda

i. The power of his resurrection
ii. Philippians 3:10 (NLT) — 10 I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death,

iii. This is Paul’s consuming passion.
iv. God wants to take you beyond your felt needs.
v. What if God doesn’t answer your prayer?
vi. What if God has a much bigger agenda for you?

Temporary need.

i. Did you know that every answered prayer is only temporary?
ii. The son dies again.
iii. Both of them.
iv. If God heals your sickness can you get sick again?
v. God has a bigger agenda.
vi. It’s the power found in the resurrection.

Eternity changes everything.
