Prayer: Using the Armor of God

Continuation of Paul’s discussion on the Armor of God

Read Eph 6:18-20 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Notice Pray and All used four times. Paul’s making a point here.

2. Prayer is the application of the armor of God, linking to the word stand in v14, Stand Firm

Eph 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

a. Pray in the Spirit

i. Pray in the Spirit linked to tongues in 1 Cor 14:15. The Spirit intercedes for us in sighs/groans too deep for words, Rom 8:26.

ii. FF Bruce: “praying under the Spirit’s influence and with His assistance.”

iii. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your prayers and to pray through you

b. Pray always and for all things

i. Praying again is not a lack of faith

c. Be on guard, praying for each other

i. We stand firm when we stand together

3. Prayer during suffering,

Eph 6:19-20 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

a. Paul asks for prayer for God to give him the words to speak and for boldness even while in chains

b. Paul does not ask for prayer for the end of this imprisonment

4. How do we pray all the time for all things?

a. Set times for prayer (daily offices)

b. Breath prayer

c. Pray the scriptures.
