Five Truths for Mom

1 Samuel 1:10–28

Here are five truths from the life of Hannah that apply not just to moms but to all of us because they’re Biblical truths. They give us some guidelines for raising this generation of godly kids and strong families.

I. The Truth of Importance:

a. Hannah understood what was important. She had a God-given instinct to have a child, and that instinct was put in her heart by Almighty God because she knew what the Bible teaches over and over again that children are a blessing and an unmistakable gift from God. (1 Samuel 1:10–11; Psalm 127:3)

II. The Truth of Supplication:

a. When you realize what’s important, then your prayers line up (1 Samuel 1:10). When do you begin to intercede for your children? Not after they are born; before they’re born. Children ought to come in an answer to prayer. Hannah prayed, and God gave her little Samuel, the greatest individual in the Old Testament between Moses and King David, because she prayed and said, “God—God—I want a baby that I can give back to you.” There is the truth of supplication. Supplication means “entreaty, humble and earnest prayer in worship, a petition or earnest request.”

III. The Truth of Desire:

a. Now, here’s the third truth. What’s the first truth? Importance. The second? Supplication, because your prayers line up by importance. Now, third. Hannah had a godly desire. Importance and supplication determine your desire (1 Samuel 1:11). She wanted Samuel to be a Nazarite – to live a life dedicated to God. She was saying, “I want a holy child. I want a child separated unto the Lord.” What’s the truth? If the child is a gift of God, then our desire is that that child must be given back to God.

IV. The Truth of Resolve:

a. (1 Samuel 1:12-20) Now, here’s the truth of resolve: No matter how dark, how desolate, how difficult, pray and keep on praying (Isaiah 40:31; Psalm 37:7; Psalm 27:14; Ephesians 6:18). Because of Hannah’s resolve, her sorrow was turned to gladness. Now if you’ve been praying for a child, and you say, “I want a baby. I can’t have a baby.” Who knows, but the Lord may enable you to adopt a child one day and give them a Christian home. Just pray about it till you know God’s perfect will for your life. Be resolved.

V. The Truth of Influence:

a. If you get what’s important right, you’ve been resolved to go before God consistently in prayer and supplication, and then you do what you alone can do to influence that child for the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Samuel 1:21-28). A father has an influence on a child, but the deepest impression is made by a mother. And Hannah was so influential in her son’s life, Samuel, that she changed the course of history. There is nothing greater than to raise a baby for the Lord Jesus Christ. Don’t underestimate the power of a mom.

b. Imagine how different this world would be if we lost our godly mothers. Imagine how different this world would be if we had more sons and daughters with mothers like Hannah. Children are more important than your job. They’re more important than your friends. They are the most precious thing on this side of heaven. Thank God for Christian mothers. May God help you be like Hannah and remember these five truths.
