Message 1
John 14:27 Philippians 4:7
Me:

Peace of Mind

a. Something I pursue!
i. It’s defined as to feel safe or protected.
ii. Having Tina home gives me peace of mind.
iii. Being on time give me peace of mind.
b. Ways I use peace.
i. Rest in peace
ii. It’s peaceful here.
iii. Don’t disturb my peace.
iv. It’s a peaceful night.
c. Not being peaceful can get you arrested.

Disturbing the peace

ii. Under 720 ILCS § 5/26-1, someone commits disorderly conduct when they consciously behave in an unreasonable way that alarms or disturbs another person or disturbs the peace.
iii. Class C misdemeanor
We:
2. The Hebrew word is

Shalom.

a. It means freedom from trouble.
i. A greeting meaning peace be with you.
ii. It means experiencing the highest good, enjoying the very best, possessing all the inner good possible.
iii. It means wholeness and soundness.
iv. It means prosperity in the spiritual sense of having a soul that blossoms and flourishes.

The opposite of peace.

i. Chaos
ii. Anxiety
iii. The believer that loses their peace has three things that happen.
1. We can become discouraged and defeated. (Sheepish and self-conscious)
2. We can become cantankerous, critical, gossipy, grumbling, and divisive.
3. We can begin to slip back into sin.
iv. “The peace he once had with God and man becomes disturbed, and restlessness grips his soul.”
v. His restlessness stirs him into being a troublemaker or into sin or else it plummets him into despair and defeat.
vi. He has failed; therefore, he feels unworthy and unable to walk victoriously with God.
vii. So many believers today are peaceless.
viii. Maybe you have found yourself there too.
ix. I have good news.
x. For the next seven weeks we are going to study Phil 4:19 and look at six steps we can do to restore the peace of God.
xi. Notice two passages.
God:

Peace of God.

Promised by Jesus.

i. John 14:27 (NLT) — 27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
John 14:27 NLT
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
b. There is the peace of the world.
i. This is a peace of escapism, of avoiding trouble, of refusing to face things, of unreality.
ii. It is a peace that is sought through pleasure, satisfaction, contentment, absence of trouble, positive thinking, or denial of problems.
c. There is the peace of Christ and of God.
i. This is a peace that comes from deep within.
ii. A peace of the soul. The spirit.
iii. It is a tranquility of mind that is unruffled. No fainting heart here.
iv. A peace that is calm in the face of bad circumstances and situations.
v. It is more than feelings—even more than attitude and thought.

Promised to the Philippians

i. Philippians 4:7 (NLT) — 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7 NLT

ii. Sign me up for that.
iii. How do we get there?
You.
4. Do these six things.

Stand firm.

i. You will discover the strength to stand firm in the toughest trails
ii. See v:1
iii. Two places – The Lord himself and the encouragement of each other.

Through agreement and unity

i. It is a sin to be divisive.
ii. See v:2-3

Through rejoicing

Proverbs 23:7 (KJV)
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:
ii. See v:8-9
We:

When life is chaotic.

a. My life is hectic.
i. I love my happy places!
ii. The problem is the chaos is still there.

A gift I leave you!

i. We can have that peace that passes all understand.

Have you lost that peace?
