INTRODUCTION
Let’s turn together
in our Bibles
to Luke’s gospel.
Luke
chapter 3.
& we’re gonna read
verse 15 & 16.
Luke 3:15-16.
& when you find that
in your Bible
pls stand for
the reading
of God’s Word.
The title of
today’s teaching is.
Holy Spirit Baptism.
This is part 1
of what will be
at least
a 2 part series.
& if the Lord is willing
we’ll cover the 2nd part
nxt week.
In Luke 3:15-16
the Scriptures say
Luke 3:15–16 (NIV)
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.
16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
You may be seated.
In part one
of this series
we learned three truths
abt HS Baptism.
Based on
what Luke teaches us
in the gospel of Luke
& the book of Acts
we learned that
The Promise
of HS baptism
is for all God’s ppl.
We learned that
the meaning
of HS baptism is
To RECEIVE the gift
the Father promised;
to be FILLED w/
the HS;
to have the HS
POURED OUT on you;
& to have
the Holy Spirit
COME ON you.
For Luke
those are all
dfrnt ways
of saying
the same thing.
& we saw that
the Purpose of
HS Baptism is
to receive supernatural SPIRITUAL GIFTS
that equip us
for Christ-honoring service.
Today
we turn our attention to
The PARTICULARS
of HS baptism.
We’ll answer
two questions
When does HS
baptism happen?
How does HS
baptism happen?
PRAYER
Let’s pray:
Lord we thank You
for Your Word.
Open our eyes
our hearts
& minds
to see
[Transition:
the 1st question
we want to answer is…]
WHEN does Holy Spirit baptism happen?
In Acts 2:38
Peter appears
to link Spirit baptism
w/ repentance
& water baptism.
Peter says:
Acts 2:38 (NIV)
38Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Peter seems
to be saying:
If you repent
& are baptized
You will receive the gift
of the HS
in baptism.
A lot of ppl
combine this verse
w/ the one in
Ephesians 4
Where Paul says:
There is one Baptism
& then conclude
that HS baptism
happens in water
baptism.
A lot of ppl teach that.
I was taught that.
& I taught that myself.
& if that were
the only verse in Acts
that talked abt
Spirit baptism
We cld say
“The gift of
“the HS
“& therefore
“HS baptism
“is received
in water baptism.”
But there are
other verses in Acts
That show us
that conclusion
is not possible.
For example:
In Acts, chapter 8
Luke tells us
Philip the Evangelist
went into a Samaritan city
& preached
the gospel.
& Many believed
in Jesus
& were baptized
in water.
When the Church
in Jerusalem
heard abt this
They sent Peter & John
dwn to Samaria.
& in Acts 8:15-19
Luke tells us
what happened nxt.
He says:
Acts 8:15–22 (NIV)
15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,
16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money
19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!
21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.
22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart.
Remember
when Luke talks abt
receiving the HS
& the HS coming on ppl
he’s talking abt
being baptized
w/ the HS.
So, these believers
in Samaria
had been baptized
in water.
But they had not
been baptized
w/ the HS.
Now
if receiving the HS
happens when a person
is baptized in water
Then why
did these believers
Not receive
the HS
When they were
baptized
in water? […………]
The answer is
Being baptized
w/ the HS
Does not happen
in water baptism.
These new believers
in Samaria
were born-again
& baptized by
the HS into
Christ’s body
thru water baptism.
But they were not
baptized with the HS
Until Peter & John
prayed for them
& placed their hands
on them.
We see this
same thing again
in Acts
chapter 19.
Luke says
Paul found some disciples
in Ephesus.
These disciples
had been taught
abt Jesus by Apollos.
& in Acts 19:2-6
Paul asks them
this question:
He asks
Acts 19:2–6 (EHV)
Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” “No,” they answered, “we have not even heard that the Holy Spirit was given.”
Paul asked, “What were you baptized into then?” They replied, “Into John’s baptism.”
Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.
When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.”
When Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them...
These disciples
had received John’s baptism
But they had not received
Christian baptism.
So, Paul administers
Christian baptism.
& as in the case
of the Samaritans
It was not until
the Apostle Paul placed
his hands on them—
Just as
the Apostles Peter & John
did w/ the Samaritans—
It was not until then
That these disciples
received the HS.
The HS
came on them.
They were baptized
w/the HS.
Frm these two passages
We can confidently confirm
that HS baptism
does not happen
in water baptism.
There are at least
two other examples
of ppl being baptized
w/ the HS
outside of
water baptism.
The 1st is the day
of Pentecost
when the HS
was poured out
on Jewish believers
for the first time.
The 2nd is
when the HS
was poured out
on Gentile believers
for the 1st time.
As Luke tells us in
Acts 10:44–47 (NIV)
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.
46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,
47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”
Those last two sentences
again make it
crystal clear
that being baptized
w/ Water
& being baptized
w/ the HS
do not happen
at the same time.
Cornelius
& His household
received HS baptism
bfr they received
water baptism.
So, to answer the question
When does
HS baptism happen?
We know for certain
HS baptism
does not happen
in water baptism.
We also know
in the four places
in Luke & Acts
where Luke
tells us when
someone was baptized
w/ the HS
three of those happened
after water baptism.
The only exception
is Cornelius
& His household.
& there’s a good reason
the Gentiles received
HS baptism
bfr water baptism.
It’s bcs nobody
thought God wld
accept Gentiles
w/o circumcision.
So the Lord
orchestrated this
whole event
w/ angels & visions.
He sent
Peter to these Gentiles
to preach the gospel.
They accepted
the message
& the Lord baptized
them w/ the HS
to show he had
accepted them
w/o circumcision.
As Peter says in
Acts 15:7–8 (NIV)
7 “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.
8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.
So this is why
Cornelius & his
household received
HS baptism
bfr they were baptized
bcs God had to show
the leaders
of the Church
He accepted the Gentiles
w/o circumcision
by giving them
the HS bfr
they were baptized
in water.
& Peter says in
Acts 10:47 (NIV)
47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”
The three
other times
Luke mentions
those who were baptized
w/ the HS
for the 1st time
it happened
after they were
baptized in water.
It happened w/:
Jesus
The Samaritans
& the Ephesians.
So when does
HS baptism happen.
Holy Spirit baptism happens the first time AFTER water baptism.
We shld expect
HS baptism
to happen
for the 1st time
after someone
is baptized
in water.
Now:
Notice I said
for the 1st time.
I say this bcs
As we read
the book of Acts
We see there’s more to
Being baptized
w/ the HS
than the
1st filling.
Ppl were filled w/
the HS
more than once.
& remember
Luke uses filled w/
& baptized w/
the HS
interchangeably.
So
Scripturally speaking
HS baptism happens
more than once.
Let me give you
two examples.
First:
In Acts 4:7
Luke says
the religous rulers
in Jerusalem
Acts 4:7–8 (NIV)
7 ...had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!
Peter was initially filled
w/ the HS
on the day of Pentecost.
Here
Peter was filled
a 2nd time.
& in both cases
after being filled
w/ the HS
Peter boldly proclaimed
the truth that
Jesus was the Messiah
& the only way
to salvation.
When the HS filled Peter
He was gvn
supernatural power
& ability to
speak boldly
as a witness
for Jesus.
Another example
of ppl being filled w/
or baptized w/
the HS more than once
is found as we continue
in Acts 4.
Those same religious leaders
told Peter & John
to stop speaking
in the name of Jesus.
When Peter & John
reported this
to the other disciples
Luke tells us in
Acts 4:29-30
they prayed
Acts 4:29–30 (EOB: NT)
29 “And now, Lord, consider their threats and grant your bondservants to speak your word with complete boldness.
30 Stretch out your hand to heal, and may signs and wonders be accomplished through the Name of your holy child Jesus.”
& in Acts 4:31
Luke tells us
the result of
this prayer.
Acts 4:31 (EOB: NT)
31 When they had prayed, the place where they were gathered was shaken. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and proclaimed the word of God with boldness.
In a similar way
to what happened
on the day of Pentecost
God’s ppl prayed.
& the place where
they were gathered
was shaken.
& God answered
His ppl’s prayer
to be empowered
to speak God’s Word boldly
by filling them
w/ the HS.
We saw last week
that this is
the purpose
of HS baptism.
God baptizes
His ppl
w/ the HS
to equip us
w/ supernatural
spiritual gifts
for Christ-honoring
service.
He may give us
speaking gifts
as in the case
we just saw.
Or He may give us
some other
spiritual gift.
As Paul says in
1 Corinthians 12:4–11 (NIV)
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
The purpose
of HS baptism
is to equip us w/
supernatural gifting
for the common good
of everyone
in the Church.
& the way
the HS
distributes those gifts
is thru filling
& re-filling us
w/ God’s grace
as we’re baptized
w/ the HS
over & over again.
It’s in these
repeated baptisms
or fillings w/ the HS
That we gain
extraordinary empowering
for Christ-honoring service.
So when
does HS baptism happen?
The 1st filling
happens
after baptism
in water.
& after that
It needs to happen
over & over again.
We need
fresh & continuous fillings
of the HS
to equip us for
Christ-honoring service.
[Transition: Let’s look now
at a 2nd question
abt being baptized
w/ the HS.]
HOW does Holy Spirit baptism happen?
In the NT Scriptures
we see find that
Holy Spirit baptism happens
through PRAYER and the Apostles PLACING hands on people.
I don’t blv it’s
a coincidence that
the 1st person
to be baptized
w/ the HS
was praying
when it happened.
As we read in
Luke 3:21–22 (NIV)
21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove.
Notice
the Lord Jesus
was baptized
in water
by John the Baptizer.
Then
as the Lord Jesus
was praying
the HS
came upon Him.
So
Luke establishes
early on
the pattern
of being baptized
w/ the HS
after water Baptism.
Luke does not
specifically say
Jesus was praying
to receive the HS—
But it’s a pretty safe
conclusion.
Based on the fact that
the HS came on Jesus
while He was praying
& also bcs of what
Jesus says later on
in Luke 11:11-13.
Jesus asks
Luke 11:11–13 (NIV)
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?
12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
There’s
a two-fold promise
in these verses.
1st:
Jesus says
the Father will give
the HS
to those
who ask Him.
The HS is gvn
thru prayer.
2nd:
We never
need to worry
that the Father
will give us something
dfrnt than what
we ask for.
The Father promises
to give the HS
to those who
ask Him.
That’s very likely
what Jesus was
doing when He received
the HS.
& we see
Peter & John
practicing
what Jesus taught
them abt
praying for the HS
when they went
to Samaria.
In Acts 8:14-15
Luke tells us
Acts 8:15 (NIV)
15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit...
[Transition: But there’s
more to this than prayer…]
Continuing on
in Acts 8:17
Luke tells us
Acts 8:17 (NIV)
17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
The believers
in Samaria
received the HS
after the Apostles
prayed
& laid their hands
on them.
Luke says
the same thing
abt Paul
& the disciples
in Ephesus
in Acts 19:6.
He says:
Acts 19:6 (NIV)
6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them...
Paul did the same thing
for a young disciple
named Timothy.
As Paul reminds
Timothy
in 2 Timothy 1:6-7.
Paul says:
2 Timothy 1:6–7 (NIV)
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
So
we see that
Peter
John
& Paul
all had
the same gift—
They cld communicate
the gift of the HS—
Spirit baptism—
thru the laying on
of hands.
& it’s important we know
this ministry
was not gvn
to all God’s ppl.
All God’s ppl
do not have
the ability to
communicate HS baptism
thru prayer
& placing their hands
on ppl.
If all of God ppl
did have this ability
then there wld’ve been
no need for
the Apostles
to go to Samaria
to pray
& place their hands on
the believers there.
Bcs if all believers
cld impart the HS
thru prayer
& the laying on
of hands
then the same ppl
who baptized
those in Samaria
cld’ve prayed for them
& laid hands on them
to give them
the gift of the HS.
But that’s not
what happened.
Peter & John
had to go dwn
to Samaria bcs
After the day
of Pentecost
It became clear
that it wld be
the prayers
of the Apostles
& the laying on
of the Apostles hands
that the HS
was gvn
to God’s ppl.
This truth
is one of the elementary teachings
of the Christian life
Paul talks abt in
Hebrews 6:1–2 (EHV)
1 Therefore, leaving the beginning discussion of Christ, let us press on toward matters that require greater maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, of faith in God,
2 of the teaching about baptisms, of the laying on of hands, of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
We need to be sure
we understand
Everyone
So the elders
shld lay our hands
on those who
have been baptized
in water
& pray that ppl
receive the HS.
I don’t know
any other way
to do this Scripturally.
We need to pray
to receive the HS.
We need to keep praying.
& we need to keep
expecting God
To keep baptizing us
w/ the HS.
If something
always happened
when ppl received
the HS in Scriptures
& we claim to
only be living by
the Scriptures—
then shldn’t we expect
that something shld
happen
something ppl
can point to
& say:
“Yes.
“I know I received
“the HS
“bcs something happened.”
So what did happen?
& what shld we
expect to happen?
You’ll have to come back
nxt week
to hear the answer
to that question.
