Intro
As we approach pt.2 of this series I thank God for his word because as we consider both the season we are in climate we must also consider the season that we may be in personally in life.
One of most frustrating things about storms is that when you live in places like Oklahoma storms can happen unexpectedly. You may have a forecast for sunshine and it rain. You can have a forecast for rain and it hail. You can have a forecast for hail and get a tornado. You can have a forecast for tornado watch and get an earthquake. Storms are not always predictable. But, just because you can’t always predict a storm does not mean you can’t always be ready. Everyone in here knows what to do in any weather or storm situation. If it is going to be hot you know to stay hydrated. If it’s going to rain you know to carry and umbrella. If it’s going to hail you know to stay under shelter. If it’s a tornado watch you know to get low, cover, get away from windows. And if we know how to survive in weather storms then shouldn’t we as the Church know how to survive when life storms are raging too? You have to know how to survive… (Run)
And let me tell you this child of God that if you think that calling yourself a Christian and following Jesus will keep you from life’s storms you are greatly mistaken. I’m sorry to burst your bubble and rain on your parade but it’s precisely because you follow Jesus that storms will come. As we look into our text today we see that like last week Jesus has sent the disciples into the danger zone. Following Jesus will get you tossed into a storm (elaborate).
Many of us are in storms right now. Many of us have friends in a storm right now. And all we can do is weather the storm. Sometimes Jesus doesn’t tell the storm to “Peace! Be Still!” sometimes he makes us ride it out. But even if he does that he still is with us in the storm. The text says and even better in Mark 6 that Jesus saw them struggling in the storm and he came to them. (Preach about them not recognizing Jesus). And it was this inability to recognize Jesus in the storm did it cause Peter to fall into a storm of his own. And that’s where we want to hang out for the remainder of our time. With Peter in the storm. We get at least three lessons on how to survive this storm.
1. Courage to Stand on God’s Word (v.28-29)
1. Courage to Stand on God’s Word (v.28-29)
-Peter got out of the boat
-Peter stood on Jesus word and example.
-people saw you surviving when you should have been sinking, standing kneeling, walking wailing, praising perishing, dancing down and out, living dying, empowered impeded,
2. Call God When you Begin to Sink (v.30-31)
2. Call God When you Begin to Sink (v.30-31)
Don’t get mad a Peter.
he didn’t sink because of distractions. That’s part of if. Jesus critique is that he had little faith and doubted.
3. Worship God’s Son (v.32-33)
3. Worship God’s Son (v.32-33)
When they got into the boat the the wind stopped.
“Truly” -certainly, definitely, actually, objectively, convincingly,
