First John 1:5–2:2 fits into John’s purpose of underscoring both the universality and the exclusivity of salvation through Jesus. While the heretics claimed that they could have fellowship with God (= having eternal life) without believing in God’s gift of eternal life in Jesus (see comment on 1:5–10), John strongly affirms that Jesus is the only way of salvation for all. Jesus is the propitiation for the sins not only of John (and his fellow apostolic eyewitnesses) and his original readers, but also for the rest of the world for all time (without intending to say that everyone inclusively is saved). Jesus, Jesus and no other, is the Savior for all humanity. To enjoy the benefits of his wonderful provision requires a response of faith. Without this faith, though the provision has been made, the enjoyment of its benefits are tragically missed.
