Chapter 7
Fishes and Loaves
Walking on Water
Teaching of eating my flesh and drinking my blood.
Loss of a many of His disciples.
Peter’s confession
Feast of Booths
Jesus wasn’t ready to go because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
His Brothers, James, Joses, Judas, Simon. urge him to go and let His disciples see his works
4 “For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”
Jesus’ response
6 So Jesus said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.
7 “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.
8 “Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.”
Time: Kairos
4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.”
Hour: Hora: time of opportunity divinely appointed.
His brothers go and Jesus stays
People are whispering about Jesus, both good and bad, but because the Jewish leadership is there in force, they are only whispers.
Then Jesus shows up in the temple to teach.
We are not told what He is teaching, but people were amazed.
Jesus tells them it is not from Himself, but from God.
There is more dialogue between Jesus and the people. (I encourage you to read it.)
37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.
38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
People are divided.
Prophet/Christ/ none of the above.
Nicodemus is mentioned again rightly applying the Law.
Everyone goes hime.
The Adulterous Woman
The Adulterous Woman
1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
King David was forced out of Jerusalem by Absalom. He wept and prayed up the Mount of Olives.
Triumphant entry (Jesus on a Donkey)
Garden of Gethsemane
Where He was betrayed.
Where He prayed
Where He ascended.
2 Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them.
3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court,
4 they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act.
5 “Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?”
6 They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground.
7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8 Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court.
10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?”
11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.”
Law of Moses
10 ‘If there is a man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, one who commits adultery with his friend’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
22 “If a man is found lying with a married woman, then both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman; thus you shall purge the evil from Israel.
23 “If there is a girl who is a virgin engaged to a man, and another man finds her in the city and lies with her,
7 “The hand of the witnesses shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.
The Trap? they knew Jesus showed compassion toward sinners......They thought His compassion would cause Him to say something in conflict with the law.
Jesus writing in the dust.
13 O Lord, the hope of Israel,
All who forsake You will be put to shame.
Those who turn away on earth will be written down,
Because they have forsaken the fountain of living water, even the Lord.
It’s a stretch......
His unwillingness to debate them.
Where are your accusers?
11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.”
17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
Jesus didn’t condemn her, but he also didn’t condone her behavior.
14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.”
Application
Application
Who do you more closely resemble?
Who do you more closely resemble?
The Pharisee or Jesus?
1 “Do not judge so that you will not be judged.
2 “For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.
3 “Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
4 “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye?
5 “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
6 “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
Radical aggression attack the plank.
With delicate precision get the speck.
Living and gentle correction Holy.....Your compassion to want to see your brothers and sisters in Christ living in the full Glory and Fellowship with the Father are your pearls.
People are not lining up to hear your opinion on Sin.......and if you feel the need to post any of God’s truth toward sin.
Post that He loves you and wants fellowship with you and provided a way, through Christ, to make that happen.
