Separating Lands

After Abram’s adventure in Egypt during the famine
the his followers begin to grow as do those of his family
Lot and Abram are both great in possessions and followers and their closeness causes conflict
Abram wants peace and so he separates the land of promise between he and Lot
Lot takes the land closes to the Jordan in the valley and Abram settles in Canaan

Warring Kings

it was mentioned before that the Canaanites and the Perizzites were still there
there were a ton of city states at the time all vying to become an empire and conquer the world
Lot lives near the dead sea, Sodom
the kings from the East, outnumbering the kings of the Jordan area and the Negeb
the kings of the East win and capture Lot and his family
Abram gathers his men that are trained for war and goes
not a large Army, but they go by night and they are blessed by God because Abram has blessed them
Lot is redeemed and the day is saved

Mysterious King

the very interesting part of this story
the king of righteousness, king of peace appears and brings out bread and wine
who else brings out bread and wine? around a scene of salvation and redemption
maybe a prince, maybe a priest, who knows but he clearly represents God appearing in the scene to bless Abram and bring an image forth that will be repeated
Abram refuses to take the spoils of war but gives a tenth to God and the rest left to the king of Sodom or the other Lords of the land that Abram stays in
so that Everyone will know that Abram lives and is blessed because of God and God alone

Application

I’m about to repeat myself for the thoughts on the cross
Jesus appears here and is referenced in every way
we are redeemed, saved from our place of defeat and capture
we are saved by the one who owes us nothing but because we are his he goes to face the enemy for our sake
we are family, together, having defeated the enemy through the one who lives in us
