Jesus Begins His Ministry

Mark 1:14–21 ESV
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.
we see in the begging of these verses that John was arrested.
Who was John that was arrested?
We see this is John the Baptist who was Baptizing and preaching about Jesus, and he was the person who baptized Jesus.
Matthew Luke and John all talk about as well we see in Matthew that he states
Matthew 4:12 ESV
Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.
This helps explain why Jesus went to Galilee to begin His ministry. we see in Mark 1: 14-15 is the start of His ministry.
Mark 1:14–15 ESV
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
We see Jesus is preaching the Gospel, the good news, of God.
What is the Gospel of God
The Bible, His Son, His wondrous works.
We can see in Mark 1:15 that Jesus is stating
Mark 1:15 ESV
and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
This is a call back to some of the Old Testament prophecies that were foretold of God’s Kingdom coming
We also see this same message mirrored and echoed all through out the New Testament.
But this is a monumental moment because it is the beginning of Jesus ministry.
Lets break this message down a little bit.
What does Gospel mean?
Good News
So what was the Good News that Jesus was bringing?
Jesus was saying “The kingdom of God is at hand, which means that God’s rule over people’s hearts and lives is now being fully established, and people should “repent and believe in the Gospel .”
Is that all that the Kingdom of God stands for?
No, for we also see that it means it includes the restoration of all creation.
Why do we need to be restored?
because we sinned and have made ourselves no longer pure. But Jesus is offering away that if we accept the Gospel and repent for our old ways than we can be restored to the pure form that we use to be.
This can also be mirrored within and throughout the New Testament.
We now see in that Jesus gets his first disciples in Mark 1:6-20
Mark 1:6–20 ESV
Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.
So who was the first Disciples that Jesus called
Simon and Andrew and James the son of Zebedee and John his Brother.
