Proverbs 6:20-22
3 Keys To Wise Living:
vs. 20 - Do not forsake the teaching of your mother
Teaching - torah - with strong connections to God’s law.
The assumption is that the teachings of the mother reflect the laws of God.
This is a very important point.
Everything we are looking at today carries with it the assumption that Mom was a godly mom. Not a perfect mom, but a godly one.
If this has not been your experience, I’m sorry.
By the grace of God, you can choose to change that wrong viewpoint and take what the Bible is teaching, practice it, and pass it on.
You can break the cycle of negativity and wrong teaching by the power of the Holy Spirit and pass on a godly legacy from this day forward.
Because, godly, wise teaching IS a fountain of life.
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, To turn aside from the snares of death.
And listening to wise teaching keeps you from the traps of the enemy.
Forsake - to let go of - In one ear and out the other.
college kids and young adults.
The most important law is this:
“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Three Keys To Wise Living:
Remember What You’ve Been Taught By Your Mother.
vs. 21 - Bind them continually on your heart; tie them around your neck.
This brings to mind Deuteronomy 6
Deuteronomy 6:4–9 (NASB95)
“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. “You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
vs 8-9 - bind them as a sign on your hand…write them in the doorposts and gates.
Symbolic of continual teaching, reminders, meditating, and discussion.
No different than having a memory verse on a 3x5 card taped to the mirror of the bathroom.
Or a verse painted on the wall of a house, or hung in a frame.
Bind - treasure them, value them
word used to signify Jacob’s soul knit with Bejamin’s or David’s to Jonathan’s
Tie around neck - being consciously aware of the guidance of mom. Necklace, ring, locket, pendant bracelet.
Three Keys To Wise Living:
Remember What You’ve Been Taught By Your Mother.
Treasure The Words of Your Mother.
Accept The Reproofs of Your Mother as Assisting you in Staying on the Right Path.
vs. 23 - Commandment a lamp and teaching a light.
Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
Reproofs for Discipline are the way of life.
Four Results Of Listening To Mom:
Her Wisdom will Guide You.
vs. 22 - Walk about - they will guide you.
Guidance - keep you on the right path.
This verb usually is found in connection with God as the subject and metaphorically is used to represent spiritual guidance in righteousness.
Again highlighting mom’s teaching in connection with God’s teaching.
When you don’t know what to do…go ask mom.
Four Results Of Listening To Mom:
Her Wisdom will Guide You.
Her Wisdom will Protect You.
vs. 22 - Sleep - watch over you.
Protection - keep you from the snares of the enemy.
The verb means to guard and care for; to pay close attention to; to keep an eye on.
Do you know how many times your mom has peeked into your room to check on you to make sure you were OK?
Trusting Mom’s Care: Peaceful sleep vs. worry or guilt
Four Results Of Listening To Mom:
Her Wisdom will Guide You.
Her Wisdom will Protect You.
Her Wisdom Will Keep You From Evil.
vs. 22 - When you awake - talk to you.
Counsel - keep you from bad advice.
verb meaning to ponder, converse, pray.
Interestingly enough - it’s primary use means to complain.
However, several times it is used in connection with singing praises to God and telling of His wondrous deeds among men.
Many mothers sing to and over their children.
Sing to our babies: Jesus loves you.
Jesus Loves the little children.
A song in my head when I awake.
Four Results Of Listening To Mom:
Her Wisdom will Guide You.
Her Wisdom will Protect You.
Her Wisdom Will Keep You From Evil.
Her Songs Will Keep You Company.
They - play on words.
The teaching will do these things, but the word is actually feminine
she will guide you, she will watch over you, she will talk (sing) to you.
She is with you always.
It’s a picture of a mother with her child in constant concern for their welfare, comfort and protection when in danger, and communication of loving care for a lifetime.
Mother is holding your hand to cross the street, peeking in the room to make sure you’re asleep, and singing that song when you weep.
It should be of no surprise that this is a picture of what God is like. Male and Female created in the image of God. Dad’s and Mom’s reflecting the nature and character of God to their children. It’s the passing on of the legacy of Christ to future generations.
So Be Wise and Listen to your Moms!
To Mothers:
To Mothers:
Deuteronomy 6:4–9 (NASB95)
“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. “You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
This is not exclusive to mothers as the primary thrust is to the fathers first.
But as the father sets the tone, direction, doctrine, effort, and example, it trickles down to the kids through the mother as the primary caregiver during the formative stages of a child’s development.
But that is another sermon for the 3rd Sunday in June.
The most important thing a mother can do is teach their children to love God with all that they are and to own it for themselves.
In addition to that there are 4 things that tie in directly to that and they are found in Psalm 78
We will not conceal them from their children, But tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.
That they should put their confidence in God And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments,
Sing of the praises of the Lord and His strength.
Share His wondrous works that He has done.
Encourage them to put their confidence in God.
Teach them to keep the commandments of God, specifically meaning the 10 Commandments.
4 Things to Do and 4 to Avoid
We have to make sure it’s On our Heart.
if we haven’t internalized God’s teachings, we’ll have a hard time teaching it.
We have to take ownership of it and allow His word to saturate our lives.
Avoid ignorance
We have to Teach it Diligently.
Literally means - sharp words.
just as words are cut into a stone tablet with a sharp object, so the Law should be impressed on the hearts of the children of every generation.
Avoid legalism.
We have to Walk it Out.
Many truths are picked up through observation
Kids practice what they see.
Avoid hypocrisy.
We need to make God and His Word a Natural and Normal Topic of Conversation.
Have regular conversations about God.
Make it a normal part of your life and daily routine.
It should be something they are talking about wherever and whenever.
Avoid compartmentalization.
