Oh How I Need You
Blood Medley
Psalm One
Psalm One
Psalm One
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Poor Bishop Hooper
Lyrics Psalm One verbatim
Psalm 1:1-3 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do

Thank you Sterling.
I love the chorus of that last song, “Your name is power, Your name is healing, Your name is life” There’s so much truth in that. Jesus said in John 14:6 “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” When Jesus died as the penalty for our sin, and rose again defeating the hold of sin and death on us, He provided a way for us to have a restored relationship with God the Father. He is the way. Jesus also is the author of truth, living here and now where we don’t tangibly have him as a human living among us it can be really easy to forget that He is the most real person that there is, we often can find ourselves looking to other things in the world for happiness and fullfillment and joy, but the truth, is that Jesus is the only one who can provide us with healing, and power and purpose and joy. He is truth. And Jesus also is life, the very breath that we breathe each moment, the blood flowing through our veins right now was given to us by Him when He created us with God the Father and the Holy Spirit in the beginning.
And that’s a large part of why we do things like this, why we come to churches, and especially why we sing songs to Him and about Him. He loved us so much that from even before we were born He has been providing for us. He created us, and most importantly Jesus came and died for us. Our sin separates us from God, and so God sent His son to die in our place so that we would no longer be separated. And so we lift our voices to declare our praise to Him, to thank Him for how good He is and has been to us. We sing so that we can remind ourselves of how wonderful He is, and how many things He has done for us.
In the book of Psalms, David, says this about singing.
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
Let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker. That sums it up pretty well, we can look around at the earth around us, especially in our beautiful valley, and see how creative God is, we look even at one another and our own bodies and we see how creative He is in designing things so intricate. God also made us in his image, and so like God we are able to be creative, and with that creativity from so many people in the past have come rich songs, filled with truth giving glory to our maker. And one particular song that I’ve really appreciated over the past couple of years is a song called God is Love.
And it’s just such a great reminder of how much God has done for us. The chorus says this: “He is good, and He is God, what I earned, it's not what I got, and He is just, yet oh so kind, what I deserve, it's not what I find, what more could I say about Him, my God is love”. And how true that is, in the middle of that chorus the author Chris Renzema so beautifully lays out what it means for God to be filled with mercy. The penalty for our sin is death separated from God, but that’s not what we have, instead we have unity with Him, and the promise of eternal life, and so in awe and thanksgiving we cry back to Him, how grateful we are for this beautiful gift of salvation.
I’m going to pray, and then we’ll sing this song.
