Today is Mothers Day
I personally believe that Mothers have some sort of Super Power
They have the ability to tell when their children are lying.
I say lets get rid of the Lie detector and just have Mom ask the questions.
I believe it will hold up in court.
Talk about truth .....
Truth or Dare - A game played when we were kids.
Truth or Consequences (TV show back in the 1950)
Truth or Consequences (Town in New Mexico)
The issue that many have today, when it comes to truth, is the belief that all things are true.
“This is true for me” “Your truth is not my truth”
Worse yet ..... It’s easier to believe a lie that one has heard a thousand times than to believe a truth that has been spoken once.
Meaning this, “If you keep repeating a lie long enough it will eventually be viewed as truth.”
Let me demonstrate for you what is truth and what is not.
Have Ty come up .....
Stand on one let and flap your arms like a chicken all the while cluck like one.
The truth is Ty is NOT a Chicken! AMEN!
He can mimic a Chicken!
He can dress up like a chicken!
BUT HE IS STILL NOT A CHCKEN.
Have Ty step down from the platform
WHY?
Because Ty is a Human being. More specifically he is a male human being.
But in todays world there are those who would say, “If Ty relates to being a chicken, believes in his mind he is a chicken then the TRUTH in which the way they see it is ..... HE IS A CHICKEN!”
What is taking place in our culture today is the truth is being hijacked.
John 8:31-32So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
Jesus is speaking to his disciples ......
“if you stay true to my words .....”
This marks you as a follower of Christ.
“you will know the truth”
Not mans truth .... not someone else truth ..... The Truth of God!
“it will set you free”
Free from Sin, free from lies, free to live a holy life IN CHRIST.
I Timothy 4:1-11Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things.
Let’s catch up from about 3 weeks ago.
(1) We are glad that we serve a God who speaks!
This verse is prophecy!
Some will depart from the faith.”
How?
By devoting (intentional)
To deceitful spirits (Mis-representing spirits)
and Demonic professors
Let us acknowledge the fact that there are demons.
Spiritual world
This teaching will be from Human agents!
They are liars (conscience is seared) Branded
The two topics Paul writes to Timothy about .....
(3) Marriage and Food (2 basic human needs)
Self-discipline from sex
Self-discipline from certain foods
This was from the gnostic perspective of righteousness (works)
(4) Paul tells Timothy to remind the people “God has created everything” It is good!
Verse 6-11 is our main focus today.
I Timothy 4:6-11 “If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Command and teach these things.”
Paul writes to Timothy and point out 4 things he needs to do to combat the lies of the enemy:
Abstain
Train
Command
Teach
ABSTAIN
I Timothy 4:7Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths.”
The word nothing in the Greek is “Paraiteomai”
Means: to shun, to avoid, to refuse (Present which means “constant”)
Have nothing to do with .....
Irreverent silly myths
Irreverent (bebelos)
Means: pointless, worthless (opposite of Sacred)
Silly (graodes)
Means: characteristic of an elderly lady (Old Wives Tale)
Myths - Fables, Fiction
NOT: frog peeing on you and you will get warts
ABSTAIN I Timothy 1:4nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith.”
I would even include Galatians 5:19-20Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,
2. TRAIN
Secondly ..... “Rather train yourself for godliness;
Train (gymnazo) Where we get our word Gymnasium.
Means: to exercise vigorously, in any way, either the body or the mind.
of one who strives earnestly to become godly.
1 Timothy 4:8 (ESV)
8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.
3. COMMAND
Paul writes to Timothy this is what you are to do in order to combat the lies of the enemy .....
I Timothy 4:11Command ......”
To command, to order, to charge
“a proclamation, a command or commandment,” is strictly used of commands received from a superior and transmitted to others.
This wasn’t a one time deal:
Paul told Timothy 7 other times to take charge (Command)
1:3 1:5 1:18 5:7 6:13 6:14 6:17
Take back the authority we once gave up.
Use that authority that has been given to you.
4. TEACH
The final thing Paul writes to Timothy to do in order to combat the lies of the enemy .....
Teach (didasko)
To give instruction; The idea of causing someone to accepted something.
This was Timothy’s RIGHT and DUTY to teach.
I am reminded of what my Pastor said to me when I told him I accepted the call to preach.
He said, “Good, now lets get you started by teaching a Sunday school class.”
When you are teaching you are preparing, reading, studying, and learning what you are going to teach.
I will say that teachers today face things like we have never seen in days past.
I ran across this .....
An 1872 list of rules for teachers, posted by a New York City principal, included:
Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and scuttle of coal for the day’s sessions. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly. After ten hours in school, the teachers should spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barbershop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intentions, integrity and honesty.—Esso Manhattan
Times sure has changed.
Paul tells Timothy in order to combat the lies of the enemy .....
Abstain
Train
Command
Teach
This is instructed to Timothy so that He, along with others, may not depart from the faith.
..... by devoting themselves to Deceitful Spirits and Demonic professors.
In a sense ..... you are becoming Lie detectors.
