Jesus’ claim (last week)
This week: Jesus proves His clam
Main Point: Jesus’s power confirms He is the Messiah.
Jesus teaches with power
Luke 4:31–32 (ESV)
31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority.

Jesus’s teaching = authority
Speaking as the author
Authority = power
Ask: What did the power of Jesus’s teaching reveal about who He is? What does this mean for us today?
Not just a man
We follow the God-man
“Astonished”
“Struck out of themselves”
“Out of their senses”
Long lasting
Having something important to say
Stands out
Ask: What makes the Gospel different from an other message in the world?
Jesus spoke like no one else spoke
Religion vs. relationship
2. Jesus casts out demons with power
33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
Peter: “all who were under the tyranny of the devil” (Acts 10:38).
Many people ruled by demons in Israel
Frequent for Jesus
Central to mission
Not just moral example; Heavenly Combatant
Cruel rule > righteous rule
Demons had to obey
Ask: Demons were forced to leave peoples’ lives when Jesus commanded them to leave. What does that teach us about His authority?
More than a fantastic teacher
Distinguished Messiah
“Amazement”
Putting evil in its place
Power and authority over spirit realm.
Hasn’t changed
His authority over us drivers out others
Nothing can separate
Ask: Through Christ, how can we be victorious over the schemes of the devil against us?
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
3. Jesus heals sickness with power
38 And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.
40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, 43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
Jesus’ desire: health in spirit, body, mind, and emotions
Three categories of brokenness:
Fever
A “high fever”
Various sicknesses and diseases
Demonic oppression
Not one issue was a match
Countless ways to be messed up; one way to be made whole
Ask: What do Jesus’s miracles for the sick and diseased tell us about his concern and care for people?
Laying on of hands
OT blessing, but unique to healing
Attention and empathy for each person
Jesus does what He said He would do
Wanted him to stay; wanted to take power to other towns
What can we learn from Christ’s commitment to getting the good news to every town he could?
“He had to go where other people were. He had to tell people that God was becoming king in a new way, that God’s long-awaited salvation was breaking into the world, even though it didn’t look like they had expected it would.”
Out of comfort zone
Following God’s leading
Christ Connection:
Jesus demonstrated His power and authority in teaching truth, casting out demons, healing sickness, and forgiving sin. Jesus revealed His power over sin and death in his death and resurrection. Nothing-lies, sin, sickness, death, or demons-can hold power or authority over those who trust in Jesus.
Head: In what ways do Jesus’s miracles set Him apart from all others in history?
More powerful, wonderful, and meaningful
He stands alone
Only way to salvation
Miracles confirm claim (power)
Heart: How does Jesus need to heal your heart and mind along with your sin?
Creator of the whole person-spirit, mind, and body
Wholeness (now and to come)
Hands: How should we live differently based on Jesus’s example?
43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.”
