2 Timothy 1: 1-7 KJV
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;
5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Pray:
The word of God is telling us here that Timothy had a Godly mother. And...
We find that Timothy had been a student of the scripture his entire life. Again because of his mother. As we are told in 2 Timothy 3:15
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
From a child, his mother was teaching him the Holy word of God
Godly Christian mothers have done more for the cause of Gods Kingdom than anyone else.
More than schools, more than churches and more than Sunday schools. More than anyone else a mother has the power to influence our community and our nation.
Godly Christian women, wives and mothers are the backbone of civilization.
Think of the mothers who have changed the course of civilization.
The mother of Moses Jochebed taught him to suffer affliction with the people of God, rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.
Without a doubt the mother of Moses did more to change the course of ancient history than any prince any King or any man in her generation. Nobody did more for the cause of liberty in her generation than the mother of Moses Jochebed.
Think of Samuels mother Hanna who gave him to God before he was ever born. And allowed Eli the Priest to raise him in the Temple. And he became the first of Gods great prophets.
John the Baptists mother Elizabeth we are told was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Timothy’s mother we read about here Eunice led him to Christ and taught him to follow Christ. Allowing him to become the great man who two New Testament books are written by.
George Washington once said. My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual, and physical education I received from her. And where would we be as a Nation today without George Washington.
General Douglas Macarthur said. My sainted mother taught me a devotion to God and a love for country that has ever sustained to me. To her I yield anew a sons reverent thanks.
So many writers of the gospels thank their mothers for their Godly upbringing.
We have all heard of the great works of John and Charles Wesley who brought about the Methodist revival. But they were not even the greatest Wesley. Let me tell you about the mother of these legendary men of God:
Susanna their mother. Was the youngest of 25 children. Yes, you heard that right. Twenty-five children. And folks the only way we are going to turn this country back around is for Godly Christian women to go back to having as many children as the Lord blesses them with.
Her father was known as a dissenting Pastor. Like me he called for the reformation of a corrupt church. In fact, all the great ministers in the bible and throughout history were dissenting ministers. They fought against the tide of a church that had fallen into misinformation, heresy, and worldliness.
Her father and her husband were both named Samuel, and both were pastors. Her husband’s father was also a dissenting pastor. So, her father was a dissenting pastor, her father in law was a dissenting pastor.
She had 19 children. 9 died in infancy. Of the 10 who lived 7 were girls and three were boys. All 3 boys earned their MA degrees from Oxford and became ministers. Samuel the oldest became the President of a school.
John and Charles became the founders of the Methodist church. John becoming one of histories greatest preachers. And Charles becoming one of Christian history’s greatest song writers.
She adamantly refused to give her children any formal instruction until the age of 5. But the day after their 5th birthday their formal education began. She provided her children with a classical education. Including teaching her children latin and Greek. When her husband was away on Sunday, she would read a sermon from either her father or her husband. Followed by reading a Psalm and prayer to her children.
She spent one hour a day praying for her ten children. She took each child aside one hour a week to personally give them spiritual instruction. She would spend much of the day of each child’s birthday praying for that child.
If moms and dads spent more time praying for their children as opposed to spoiling them today’s kids would turn out better.
Susanna had 6 rules for raising children. Listen carefully:
1. Subdue self-will in a child. And thus, work with God to save his soul. A stubborn will is not reachable with the gospel of Jesus Christ. If your child does not develop a humble heart and a sensitive spirit, there is little chance that child can be saved. It is pride and stubbornness that keeps people out of heaven. If you want your child to die and go to hell than just keep giving in to their stubborn willful pride. And that is exactly what will happen.
2. Teach him to pray as soon as he can talk.
3. Give him nothing he cries for. And only what is good for him IF he asks politely. Then give in.
4. To prevent lying. Punish no fault which is freely confessed. Genuinely confessed with the tender heart of apology and sorrow. Forgive. But NEVER allow a rebellious and sinful act to go unnoticed.
5. Commend and reward good behavior. Praising your kid for being tall or smart or talented or pretty isn’t an accomplishment. Those are gifts from God. Praise them for honesty, courage, and character. That is what a Godly wife should commend. Being tall and smart and pretty are all great. But it doesn’t matter. Character is what we should encourage.
6. Strictly observe all promises that you make to your child.
This is how Susanna Wesley a Godly woman raised her children. And her kids changed the course of human history. What an amazing Christian woman she was. And we aren’t even talking about the wonderful ladies that she raised.
And of course, we cannot get into motherhood without discussing the virtuous woman. So, turn with me, if you will to : This Proverb was written by Solomon to his mother Bathsheba.
Proverbs 31:10
10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
14 She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.
19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
In the beginning of this chapter, we are told these are the words of King Lemuel. This name Lemuel is the nickname given to King Solomon by his mother. And starting in verse 10 Solomon is discussing the things that his mother taught him.
And number one is in verse 3.
Give not thy strength unto women
What this means is do not have multiple wives. That’s what she was telling him. Doing this will destroy you. Bathsheba knew very well of the evils of polygamy. The fruit of this evil brought about horrible judgement to David. And even King David, the anointed of God, the sweet Psalmist could not escape judgement for this horrific sin of his. If you will recall Nathan pronounced fourfold judgement on David for his sin of adultery. A judgement that David pronounced on himself unknowingly. The results of Davids sin?
1. David and Bathsheba’s baby died.
2. David’s firstborn son raped his only daughter Tamar.
3. Tamars full blood brother Absolom murdered Davids oldest son Aemon.
4. Absalom insurrected against David’s Kingdom. Rapes David’s Concubines in public and is killed by David’s General, Joab.
God held David to his word, and he reaped fourfold judgement. His sin cost him four sons. These were among David’s favorite son. And they all died because of his sin.
Moses said in.
Deuteronomy 17:17
Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away:
David broke the law of Moses and paid a horrible price. Bathsheba knew firsthand. And was imparting Godly advice to her son Solomon.
Solomon the man that God loved. The son of David and Bathsheba. The wise and brilliant man. The wisest King Israel ever had. The King of Peace. Solomon never knew war as his father did. This great man. Did not listen to his mother. By the end of his life Solomon had married hundreds of wives. Many of them Pagan woman. And in so doing inflicted untold sorrow unto himself. At the end of his life those pagan wives led him away from God. And he died backslidden out of Gods will. This great man. Refused to listen to his mother.
Listen to me young people. The most important factor in choosing a husband or wife is commitment to a shared Christian conviction. The most important thing in determining who you marry is knowing that you both share Christian convictions.
You young ladies. Stop looking for men in bars. You will not find a Godly man in a bar. You young men stop looking for young women in bars. You will not find a Proverbs 31 woman in a bar.
And listen to me carefully young ladies. If you plan to have or are having children, remember this. Your son is going to marry a woman just like you. So, if you are a liar and a cheat and a drug addict. Look in the mirror and meet your future daughter in law.
If you raise girls know that these little girls will turn out like you. If you are wordily, they will be worldly. If you never go to church, they will never go to church. If you are a meth head, they will likely be a meth head. Being a parent is the most tremendous blessing God can give us. Take care with your blessings.
I can tell you that I would never marry a couple where one is lost and the other is saved. They are unequally yoked.
Young man and young lady. Stop thinking that you can change someone. The person you are dating will be the person you marry. Do not marry someone who will turn your heart from God.
You will never be able to serve God if you marry a man or woman who doesn’t share your convictions. You are better off single. Being single isn’t as bad as being married to an ungodly person.
Solomon should have listened to his mother.
Second, he told her go back to Proverbs 31 and read versus four and five:
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
She told her son to avoid strong drink. Alcohol is called spirits for a reason. It will dull your judgement. You cannot be a good King and be a drunk. Alcohol will deprive you of your wisdom. It will take away your ability to rule with a clear mind. The abuse of alcohol is one of the greatest curses in the world today. It not only destroys your body, but your mind as well.
Look at hard drinkers. At 40 they look 70. It kills brain cells and the liver. Plus, it distorts your judgement. There are a lot of people in prison today that would have never done what they did had they been sober.
Be not drunk with wine wherein is excess but be filled with the Spirit. So she says son. You need your wits.
3. She said in verse 9:
9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
She is telling him to rule with righteousness and justice. Solomon then uses a Hebrew poem to honor his mother. And that is what we read earlier. Solomon collected Proverbs and poems. Likely got this from his father who loved music and poetry. We have the book of Psalms which comes from the heart of these lyricists and musicians. So, Solomon had this innate love for poetry and for music.
The poem of the virtuous woman is Solomon honoring his mother.
Who can find a virtuous woman, asks Solomon. If you find such a woman. Marry her. Because you have found something more valuable than gold or silver.
I’m going to share with you my convictions now:
I believe that as Americans we need to fight to bet rid of property taxes as rent on properties is a tenant of Communism. And then we need to shut down the Public Schools. After that we need to allow our mothers to raise and educate their own children without the influence of government and the indoctrination systems or prisons known as public schools.
And we need Godly women who love the word of God and want to have as many children as God will bless them with to do so. And to teach them at home while the man provides.
Feminism has all but destroyed the church and this once great country.
Listen to the plans of Communist Russia:
1. We will send their women against their men and thereby destroy the strength of their families.
Here are the top four feminist leaders.
1. Andrea Dworkin Communist.
2. Betty Friedan Communist.
3. Eve Ensler Communist.
4. Gloria Steinman Communst.
5. Rosa Luxemburg Communist.
6. Andrea Broffman Communist.
7. Bella Afzug
8. Blu Greenburg.
9. Brenda Howard Jew.
10. Arlene Raven
11. Buz Hahn
12. Betty Comdon
13. Cathy Young
14. Clara Fox
15. Elfinede Jelnick.
16. Elle Willis
17. Emily Melman
18. Gertrude Stein
19. Gloria Allred
20. Grace Failey
21. Hannah Blank, Ruth Ginsberg.
22. Helen Cohen
23. Jean Kothemburg.
24. Jennifer Miller. Who is a transgender and Jew. A woman or man with a beard.
25. Joyce Warshaw.
26. Judy Blume.
I could go on all day long. ALL of the women of the feminist movement and the transgendered movement in this country are communist. . When you have men putting on wigs and insisting that they have a right to use the women's restrooms then it is time for us as men to step up and defend real women.
It is my conviction that a virtuous woman stays home and puts her children first. And I believe this conviction to be consistent with the word of God. No job is more important than your children ladies. And feminism is straight from the pits of hell.
We do not need the N.O.W. or as I call it: The National Organization of Witches. What we need in this country now more than ever. Are Proverbs 31 women who love their husbands and children and make for them a Godly home.
This being Mother’s Day. Today we honor those women who have made the decision to be a Godly wife and a Godly mother. I understand that today it takes two incomes. And I do not wish to judge anyone for their choices. But I am calling for us to return to the old ways and to put God and family first.
As a wife and a mother, you have unbelievable potential to do a wonderful work for God. Your potential isn’t measured in financial terms as feminists would have you believe. But in being a virtues woman and a Godly mother. And let me add this: I am fine with equal work for equal pay. I am fine with a woman's right to a career. Where I have a problem with feminism is when they start to devalue women who choose to be mothers and wives. A woman who wants to be a mother and a wife is far more valuable than a million career minded feminists because we entrust to them our greatest treasure. Our Children and our future.
And finally, before closing I want us to take a look in the book of Genesis 3:16 KJV
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
Matthew Henry writes:
The woman, for her sin, is condemned to a state of sorrow, and of subjection; proper punishments of that sin, in which she had sought to gratify the desire of her eye, and of the flesh, and her pride. Sin brought sorrow into the world; that made the world a vale of tears. No wonder our sorrows are multiplied, when our sins are so. He shall rule over thee, is but God’s command, Wives, be subject to your own husbands. If man had not sinned, he would always have ruled with wisdom and love; if the woman had not sinned, she would always have obeyed with humility and meekness.
This is the very opposite of what feminism teaches our young Christian women.
But today we honor those ladies who are virtuous mothers and wives. And ask the Lord to send us an abundance of more. Like the ladies we have at Westside Baptist Church.
Nothing in this world is more important than the job of being a mother. And we celebrate with gratitude and respect those women throughout history and those among us who love the Lord Jesus Christ and teach our children to do the same.
