Happy Mothers Day!! what a great joy to be here to praise and glorify God. But also honor mothers.
Growing up I didn’t have the best childhood. But there was always remnants of Gods handiwork even in such difficulty.
I remember my mom listening to a gospel singer Darryl Conley growing up. Those songs that my mom used to play ministered to me.
Or the time I was about 13 or so and I was trying to leave the house and my mother wouldn’t let me and she grab me and said God gives her strength. Almost ripped my shoulder out of place lol haha.
20 My son, keep your father’s command, And do not forsake the law of your mother.
21 Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck.
We see here that we are to wear the commands and laws of our parents inwardly. And grace them outwardly .
Like our lives should reflect the investment of our parents.
Allot of the things Solomon learned was from his mom Bethshiaba .
Back then the mothers where larger responible for raising the kids.
We would even see in some cases the mom would have seperate houses or apartments just to raise the kids. Or if the husband had multiple wives like David and Solomon did.
If we look at the middle East esp. under Mohammedan rule (Islamic rule) motherhood is looked as a very low position. The father is superior and the mother is subservient or less than.
In the far east china they reduced motherhood down to one child per house between 1979 and 2015.
There was a friend who fled to America, because she had three kids and she ran the risk that her baby could be taken away.
Here in the west motherhood in some cases is looked as a burden. Its a status that keeps them from fulfilling my hopes and dreams and aspirations.
Abortion is so high because motherhood is despised.
Thats because motherhood is looked as a disruption to my lifestyle and personals wants.
Motherhood in the west is despised in some circles.
We see with the abortion numbers and we see motherhood being despised.
22 “If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman’s husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.
23 But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life,
Interesting while unintentional taking a wasn’t usually capital offense.
Ex 21:12-13 “12 “He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death. 13 However, if he did not lie in wait, but God delivered him into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place where he may flee.”
But if a man gets into a fight with another man, “lets say the pregnant wife jumps in to try to protect or help her husband and the other man mistaking hurts the women and kills the baby
But Motherhood indeed is a high calling from God.
Motherhood in the Old Testament Scriptures
The love of offspring ( having kids of there own) was deeply imbedded in the heart of Hebrew women, thus motherhood was highly respected.
Mothers throughout the OT occupied a prominent place.
In Rebekah’s marriage, her mother seems to have had equal voice with her father and Laban, her brother
Genesis 24:28 (NKJV)
28 So the young woman ran and told her mother’s household these things.
Rebekah ran to her household and told the family that some rich relative wanted to marry her.
Rebekahs mom played a role on the decision making of marriage for her daughter.
The mothers obligation to her child played a very significant role.
53 Then the servant brought out jewelry of silver, jewelry of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.
Traditionally it was the Father who took the dowry for the daughters hand in marriage. But in this case it was the brother and the mother.
Mothers played a significant role even as the men in these days.
60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her: “Our sister, may you become The mother of thousands of ten thousands; And may your descendants possess The gates of those who hate them.”
Also we can see motherhood was highly esteemed.
It was a blessing to be considered as one who would bare many children.
We see Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, actually his mother was his chief counselor.
7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Padan Aram.
Jacob being the patriarch of the twelve tribes of Israel. One of his primary counselors was his mom.
The 5th out of the ten commandment given by God to the people of Israel was to honor your father and mother alike
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
In the law if you strike or cursed your father or mother thats was punishable by death .
15 “And he who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.
17 “And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.
If you where habitually disobedient to you mother or father after they disciplined you that was punishable by death.
18 “If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them,
19 then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city.
20 And they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’
21 Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear.
The OT explicitly tells of a God who wants us to respect our mothers
3 ‘Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and keep My Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.
The psalms depicts the deepest of griefs as that of one who mourns for his mother
Theres no deeper grief then one who mourns from there mother.
14 I paced about as though he were my friend or brother; I bowed down heavily, as one who mourns for his mother.
But also the greatest of comforts imaginable is that of a mother.
13 As one whom his mother comforts, So I will comfort you; And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”
In the NT the birth of Christ lifted motherhood to the highest possible plane!
That fact that God came decided to enter earth through a women speaks volumes about how God sees motherhood.
Theres no higher honor of motherhood then that.
Motherhood
Motherhood is not something that you do because you are an adult.
Motherhood is not just merely trying to keep your legacy going.
Motherhood is not just having someone you want to express love to and receive that love back
Motherhood is a calling, and should be honor with the highest honor like any other calling that God has delegated to his people.
