Holding Faith, And A Good Conscience

Go1 Timothy 1:18–20 (KJV 1900)

18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;

19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

20 Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Every person here needs this

Paul warned Timothy to be armed with two weapons - Faith and Conscience

Being shipwrecked is devastating

Holding faith and a good conscience

There is a war against your faith and your conscience

Holding faith because the enemy wants to steal that from you

Neglecting faith and conscience leads to blasphemy.

Hymenaeus and Alexander were in the church

They violated their own conscience

The Holy Spirit warned them, you are not to do that

Faithfulness but then began Blaspheming the Lord

There was a day they loved the Lord

There was a day they loved the church

There was a day they loved to share the gospel

Small compromises will lead to being shipwrecked

There is so much filth available to the average person

violating conscience

The Apostle Paul had to take action to correct these two men in the church that refused to repent.

They allowed their mind to transgress

They allowed their mouth to transgress

They allowed their actions to transgress

“...delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.”

Loving one another in the church to blaspheming

Fervent love

Little sins that we give our mind and bodies lead us to separation

Fornication in the church led to members being separated from the church

There is a responsibility to the body of the church.

1 Corinthians 5:1–5 (KJV 1900)

1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.

2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

There is a responsibility to be faithful to what the church teaches from the Bible

3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

If you are living in fornication outside of marriage it must stop

Shepherds guard sheep

Do not touch someone that is not your spouse

Deacons are to hold the ministry of the faith in good conscience

DEACONS

1Ti 3:8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

1Ti 3:9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

YOUR MIND MUST BE PURE IF YOU WILL SERVE THE LORD

PURE = related to chaste; clean

The enemy is trying to steal your faith and conscience

Putting on the armor of God in our mind

We see things that try to steal our moral purity

Seeing something on accident is not sin - seeking it out is and meditating on impurity

WHAT IS A PURE CONSCIENCE?

“Free from falsity; sincerity; genuineness”

Clean of guilt towards God; blameless

God would like his people to be genuine

Not hiding anything; you get what you see

Because of our sin nature, the qualities of a pure conscience are possible only as we have our hearts cleansed by the blood of Jesus.

The prodigal -

They want to do good works to be reconciled to God.

Good works do not clean your conscience

Hebrews 9:14 KJV 1900

14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Works will follow a pure conscience

Never try to do works to be justified before God

Witnessing, Giving, Good Works are dead works

that lead to self righteousness

The moment you get saved you get a pure conscience

Unnecessary hinderances if you do not continue with a good conscience with God and men

Vertical and horizontal

How can we say we love God

1 Timothy 1:19

19 Holding faith, and a good conscience;

Clear of offences between God and man

Acts 24:16 KJV 1900

16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

Exercising, working, endeavoring

To have always

Void of offence = free from resentment; ill feelings; no breech of fellowship

The devil will move in if your conscience is not pure

Exercise = Intentionally trained his mind to not entertain thoughts and actions that would violate his spirit or quench the Holy Spirit.

Your spirit and the Holy Spirit

Intentionally is the only way exercise happens

People are difficult to get along with

When you say negative things about another brother or sister in Christ it grieves the Spirit and your spirit

“When we live with offenses before God and other human beings we sow seeds of turmoil in our conscience that will eventually bring mental and emotional breakdowns.”

In 2019, 13.6% of U.S. children between the ages of 5 and 17 years had received mental health treatment in the past 12 months.

Rom 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

Rom 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

The law is written on human hearts

A violation of conscience can actually sever a person to develop

The weaker your conscience the more offences you will have

Boldness and Confidence are available to those who protect their conscience.

A good conscience allows us to honestly look one another in the eye knowing that we are right with each other.

Pure Conscience

Act 23:1 And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

Heb 13:18 Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.

1Ti 1:5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

2Ti 1:5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

Vain Jangling = Empty speech is just random vain and empty talking

Take care and get right any offences

Hold = keep; reign; hold onto

He’s working to get you out of this church

He’s working to distract you

He’s working to discourage you

1 Peter 3:16 (KJV 1900)

16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

good conscience gives strength

Good = Healthy

blood pressure, immunity, energy
