The Truth.
Vv. 31-36.
Jesus has set us free.
We are born into bondage and slavery to sin.
When Jesus became sin and died our sin died with Him.
If we as Christians die in Him our sins are paid for and we are born into eternity with Him.
Warren Wiersbe puts it this way.
When we obey His Word, we grow in spiritual knowledge; and as we grow in spiritual knowledge, we grow in freedom from sin. Life leads to learning, and learning leads to liberty.
Warren W. Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, vol. 1 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1996), 322.
Their Delusion.
Jesus has them so off kilter that they have forgotten their own history.
They've been in bondage before, and are currently under the iron rule of Rome.
Again they miss interpret the spiritual for the physical.
When a heart of stone has blinded them to spiritual things no amount of explanation will work.
Only God can change a heart of stone. Ezekiel 36:26
Ezekiel 36:26 NKJV
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 11:14–21 NKJV
Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, your brethren, your relatives, your countrymen, and all the house of Israel in its entirety, are those about whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, ‘Get far away from the Lord; this land has been given to us as a possession.’ Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Although I have cast them far off among the Gentiles, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet I shall be a little sanctuary for them in the countries where they have gone.” ’ Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “I will gather you from the peoples, assemble you from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.” ’ And they will go there, and they will take away all its detestable things and all its abominations from there. Then I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God. But as for those whose hearts follow the desire for their detestable things and their abominations, I will recompense their deeds on their own heads,” says the Lord God.
Slave vs son.
A slave is a servant to the master.
Their place in house isn't assured.
The son is part of the family and his future is assured.
Isaac and Ishmael.
one born of sin and one born of promise.
Only the sinless Son of God can free us from the bondage of sin.
Man brought sin into the world.
Atonement for sin comes with a blood price
The sacrificial system pointed to a perfect sacrifice being offered.
Man is imperfect and sinful from birth.
It took God to come as the perfect man to pay the price for atonement.
The Son is the only one who can set us free from the bondage of sin.
Those who live continually in their sin are in bondage to the sin.
Jesus has set us free.
God gives us more than we can handle to keep our reliance on Him.
God always gives us a way out of our temptation. James 4:7
James 4:7 NKJV
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Paul with his thorn. 2 Corinthians 12:8-10
2 Corinthians 12:8–10 NKJV
Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Humility brings perspective, perspective reveals our weakness, our weakness reveals His perfect strength.
Stay humble my friends!
The seed, Abraham or satan?
Vv. 37-38: Who’s your father?
They didn't understand the message of Jesus.
Spirit Vs. physical.
Like Nic at night.
Spiritual bondage.
Descendants doesn't mean family.
They are descendants but they don’t display the family trait.
They have no room for the Word of God in their hearts.
Their desires are evil.
Jesus proclaims His Father.
Their actions and heart proclaim theirs.
Vv. 39-40: Descendant vs child
Jesus makes the distinction.
Children of God. Gal 3:6-14
Galatians 3:6–14 NKJV
just as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.” Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them.” Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Romans 8:15 NKJV
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
Galatians 4:5 NKJV
to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Vv. 41-47: Their father is satan.
Abraham was the friend of God.
Abraham listened and obeyed God.
Nature determined by birth.
We are born sinners
Romans 5:12 NKJV
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
We are born again into Christ.
John 3:3 NKJV
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
2 Peter 1:2–4 NKJV
Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
They were the tares in Jesus parable.
Matt 13:24-32 “Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ” Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field, which indeed is the least of all the …”
The wheat bows down and the tare stands up.
Wheat is humble bowed to God
The tare is prideful and stands upright.
Flesh cant comprehend spiritual things.
Their hearts were hard like pharos heart they were prideful and unable to discern the spiritual truths.
Tares look a lot like wheat until its time for the harvest.
satans children know the scripture and can play the part but they have no understanding of the Word of God.
Wisdom vs knowledge.
satan
liar and murderer.
He lied to Eve.
his lie brought sin and sin brought death.
Vv. 48-59
Honor, Dishonor, and the I AM.
The insult.
Samaritan and demon possessed, a great insult on a Jew.
Jesus honored the Father.
John 5:23 NKJV
that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
They dishonored Jesus.
Life over death Vs. 51.
The only one who has the ability to grant life over death is God.
Jesus proclaims His deity in this.
The rebuttle.
Abraham and the prophets are dead.
Honor
Jesus honored the Father and it is the Father that honors the Son.
My Father is who you say is your God.
Again Jesus proclaims His deity through Sonship.
Jesus can’t lie or it would bring discredit and dishonor to the Father.
I know Him and keep His word.
Traits of a Christian.
Do you know Him?
Do you keep His word?
Abraham rejoiced.
How did Abraham see the day of Jesus?
By faith he saw the city.
Hebrews 11:10 NKJV
for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
Heb 11:13-16 “These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.”
He saw the birth of the Messiah in the miraculous birth of Isaac.
He saw the price paid on calvary when he went to sacrifice his only son. Gen 22.
He saw the Messiah as the High Priest in the priestly ministry of Melchizedek. Gen 14:17-24.
He could see the marriage of the Lamb in the marriage of his son Isaac. Gen 24.
Before Abraham was I AM.
The hardest people to lead to salvation are the good people who claim Christianity by their good deeds and their church attendance but under live in the bondage of sin.
These are the same people who cried out for His crucifixion.
These are the people proclaiming the Lord for their own gain, doin the Lords work.
The quintessential question. Who is your father?
