We are continuing our study on the theme, “Impact 3:16” having looked last week at Job 3:16 and today turning our attention to the great chapter on wisdom from Proverbs 3:16. Here Solomon writes about what a blessing it is for the one that finds wisdom and gains understanding.
Proverbs 3:13–14 ESV
13 Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, 14 for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold.
We then read out text shortly after in Proverbs 3:16
Proverbs 3:16 ESV
16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
There have always been those false teachers out there that have taught a “Health & Wealth Doctrine” that goes something like this. If you “give your money to us” God will bless you with great health and great wealth. This has been the typical TV evangelist shtick for years. This obviously is not what the bible teaches when we read that the faithful to God are not guaranteed either health or wealth when see such passages as…
Matthew 5:10–12 ESV
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Or other passages like 2 Timothy 3:12
2 Timothy 3:12 ESV
12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
The greatest man to ever live, John the Baptist (Matthew 11:11), lived neither a very wealthy life nor healthy life.
The point is we are not promised the fullness of these so what does Proverbs 3:16 mean. Proverbs, by definition, are not absolutes but the general rule or as I like to call it, the 99.9 percent rule.
If we seek to be wise spiritually, meaning we learn and love God and his holy word, God will not only provide for our need both physically and spiritually making our life long eternally and wealth great eternally.
Matthew 6:19–21 ESV
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
