Foundational Truth 2: We Chose Sin

God gave us free will so we would choose to love Him, but we chose ourselves instead and sinned against God.

Relevant Bible Verses:
Genesis 3:7 KJV 1900
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
Genesis 3:22 KJV 1900
22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Philippians 2:12–13 KJV 1900
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
1 Corinthians 1:18 KJV 1900
18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Big Questions to Tackle:

Q: "Why did God make the devil in the first place? Why did he make the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil if he didn't want Adam & Eve to sin?"

A: This is called the "Problem of Evil." God gave us free will so that we could experience His true love, which must be a choice. If there were no alternative to 'good,' we would not know what 'good' really means. (Light illustration, darkness is only the absence of light.)

Q: "If we're all born with sin, do babies go to heaven?"

A: Of course infants and those unable to comprehend their own sinfulness are recipients of God's grace and mercy, and are in God's Kingdom. ("Age of Accountability" lesson.)

Q: "What about people who have never heard of the Bible or Jesus? How can they be forgiven of their sins if they don't even know about God?"

A: God has revealed Himself to all people (Rom. 1:20) through His creation (just like fossils and footprints prove there were dinosaurs), and even if they have not been reached by Christian missionaries, they have been given a chance to believe in our God and repent.

We want our students to understand...

We all have sin "in our hearts," inherited from Adam & Eve in the Garden, whether we actively choose to sin or not (the difference between 'active sin' and 'passive sin' or 'sin nature').

We are not capable of fixing our sin problem ourselves, and are all in need of a savior to take our punishment and pay our debt for us.

The basic concept of good & evil (biblical morality). God created the universe with good & bad, right & wrong, and these ideas are "black & white."

The basic concept of justice: Since there is evil, there must be punishment for evil in order for wrong to be made right. God is the judge of all things, and is always righteous and good.

The 'once for all' salvation by faith alone, and the daily need for Jesus' love & mercy .

Philippians 2:12 KJV 1900
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
