God Chooses David

Recap-
Saul started out well, but as he recieved power and prestige as king, he lost sight of God. Saul became proud and puffed up, and it was all about himself.
Saul’s heart wasn't right with God.
Saul thought he was wiser than God
he was disobedient
he performed a sacrifice to God without waiting for the prophet Samuel
he disobey God’s instruction in battle. He kept the spoils, and let some of the Agagites live. (1 Sam 15.10)
he failed to show repentance, when he was found in sin. Saul made excuses and blamed the people. (1 Sam 15.24 )
Saul sought honor and glory for himself (1 Sam 15.30)
Repentance: means to change your mind, to turn away from sin, and make the changes necessary to have a right heart before God.
The LORD rejected Saul and set His eyes out for a new king. A man who’s heart was for God.
1 Samuel 13:14 NKJV
14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
What does it mean to have a heart after God?
To have a heart that is totally for God?
Faith- Trust
Obedience
Worship; to seek Honor and Glory for God.
God has found a king.
Chapter 16
(1 Sam 16.1-19)
God sent Samuel to Jesse’s family in Bethlehem to anoint the next king of Israel.
Jesse lest likely, the youngest son, David, was the one God chose, because he had a heart after Gods own heart.
1 Samuel 16:6–7 NKJV
6 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Man sees;
It was customary to chose the oldest, the first born, the wisest to led the family.
We chose from the outward appearance, the strongest, most good looking, most talented.
1 Corinthians 1:27–29 NKJV
27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence.
But, God sees not as man sees. The LORD looks at the heart.
(1 Sam 2.3 ) tells us God weighs our actions. It’s not what we say, making vain proclamations, speaking christian language, Rather it is what we do that proves our hearts.
God chooses inward character, he looks for those whose faith and trust are in Him.
Faith/ trust
Obedience
Communion/ worship
Exemplified by;
Jonathan’s victory (1 Sam 14.6-7)
Abraham offered up his beloved son. (James 2.21-23)
King David - Goliath's challenge
1 Samuel 17:37 NKJV
37 Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
1 Samuel 17:47 NKJV
47 Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”
King David’s Admonition 1 Chron 28.8-9
1 Chronicles 28:8–9 NKJV
8 Now therefore, in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our God, be careful to seek out all the commandments of the Lord your God, that you may possess this good land, and leave it as an inheritance for your children after you forever. 9 “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.
David is anointed as king
The Holy Spirit rush upon David
1 Samuel 16:12–13 NKJV
12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
Today, we have the same opportunity as David, to have the Spirit, to be anointed for the work of God.
2 Chronicles 16:9 NKJV
9 For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him. In this you have done foolishly; therefore from now on you shall have wars.”
We have a freewill to chose God, to make Him the most important in our life.
1 Samuel 16:14–15 NKJV
14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him. 15 And Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you.
God uses Satan and evil to accomplish His own purposes.
We have freewill to chose evil or good, and that choice proves your heart.
As the story continues we will see Saul will not leave the throne. Although David is rightfully king, Saul will not leave, he will not give up.
Saul is a picture of Satan.
Satan is the god of this world, the ruler on earth. he is a formidable foe, who doesn’t give up easily. he want to kill, steal and destroy the people of God, he want to stop the church from serving God. he wants to stop the will and work of God.
he is the god of this world, a ruler on earth.
Job was inflicted to prove his love for God.
Jesus was tempted by Satan.
Jesus is the rightful King, He is the “King of Kings” and “Lord of lords”
when Jesus died on the cross, and rose from the dead on the third day, satan lost his power and authority over death. he lost his authority over the kingdom. Satan has no right or power over those who belong to God.
Chose this day whom you will serve.
