Romans 1:18–32 (NLT)
18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.
19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them.
20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.
21 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.
22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.
23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.
24 So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies.
25 They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.
26 That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other.
27 And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.
28 Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.
29 Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip.
30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.
31 They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy.
32 They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.
INTRODUCTION:
TS: The brokenness of mankind expresses itself in at least four ways:

I- SUPPRESSING THE TRUTH ABOUT GOD (Romans 1:18-20)

Romans 1:18–20 (NLT)
18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.
19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them.
20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualitieshis eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

A- People chose to abandon God’s designs for life and suppress the truth through wickedness. (Romans 1:18)

Romans 1:18 (NLT)
18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.

B- People are without excuse for their rejection of the truth. (Romans 1:19-20)

Romans 1:19–20 (NLT)
19 They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them.
20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

II- INVENTING FALSE RELIGIONS (Romans 1:21-23)

Romans 1:21–23 (NLT)
21 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.
22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.
23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

A- People refuse to worship God or be thankful for what He has done for them. (Romans 1:21)

Romans 1:21 (NLT)
21 Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.

B- People invent their own idols to worship instead of God. (Romans 1:22-23)

Romans 1:22–23 (NLT)
22 Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.
23 And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

III- PURSUIING DESTRUCTIVE DESIRES (Romans 1:24-27)

Romans 1:24–27 (NLT)

A- Since people did not want to acknowledge God, he allowed them to pursue the destructive desires of their hearts. (Romans 1:24)

Romans 1:24 (NLT)
24 So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies.

B- People pursue their destructive desires through violating all of the relationships God designed.

1- Their relationship with the creator (Romans 1:25)
Romans 1:25 (NLT)
25 They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.
2- Their relationships with other people. (Romans 1:24 b)
Romans 1:24 (NLT)
24 So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies.
3- The family relationships God designed. (Romans 1:26-27)
Romans 1:26–27 (NLT)
26 That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other.
27 And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.

IV- ABANDONMENT TO SHAMELESS REBELLION AGAINST GOD. (Romans 1:28-32)

Romans 1:28–32 (NLT)

A- God has allowed people to abandon themselves to foolish and shameful behavior. (Romans 1:28)

Romans 1:28 (NLT)
28 Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.

B- Abandonment to rebellion against God has led to behaviors that are destructive and will be judged. (Romans 1:29-32)

Romans 1:29–32 (NLT)
29 Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip.
30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.
31 They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy.
32 They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.

CONCLUSION:
God’s answer to mankind’s brokenness:
The Gospel (3 Circles)
Jimmy Scroggins, Lead Pastor of Family Church in Palm Beach, FL (SBC), developed a simple way to share the plan of salvation with the broken people around us … The Three Circles.

A- The first Circle represents God’s Design .

(Genesis 1:31)
Genesis 1:31 (NLT)
31 Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day.
1- God has a design for the way we live.
a. The God’s law speaks of that design.
(1) God’s law describes how we are to relate to God.
(2) God’s law describes how we are to relate to each other.
(3) Jesus summarized his law this way:
(Mark 12:29-31)
Mark 12:29–31 (NLT)
29 Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord.
30 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’
31 The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
2- All of us have departed from God’s design.
a- The Bible word for this departure from God’s design is sin. (arrow #1)
(Romans 3:23)
Romans 3:23 (NLT)
23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

B- The second circle represents Brokenness (our spiritual condition).

1- We are dead in our tresspasses and sins, resulting in an inner emptiness. (Ephesians 2:1)
Ephesians 2:1 (NLT)
1 Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins.
a- Like King Solomon, we try all kinds of ways to fix our brokenness.
(Ecclesiastes 1:2)
Ecclesiastes 1:2 (NLT)
2 “Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!”
We try relationships, activities, education, drugs, alcohol, etc., only to find it all empty and meaningless.
2- God has made a remedy for our problem of brokenness.

C- The third circle represents the Gospel.

1- Gospel means good news.
2- God has given us good news that can address our brokenness.
(1 Corinthians 15:2-4)
1 Corinthians 15:2–4 (NLT)
2 It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you—unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.
3 I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
3- We must repent and believe the Good News of Christ in order to escape our brokenness. (arrow #2) (Mark 1:15)
Mark 1:15 (NLT)
15 “The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!”
4- When we turn from our sins and believe the Gospel, we begin to recover and pursue God’s design for our lives. (Arrow #3)
(2 Corinthians 5:17)
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)
17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
