The rest of chapter 1
All Will Stand or Fall Before God:
Take warning, God is judge over all
Take Comfort, God offers hope to all
For those who turn to God and trust in Him, He offers hope, but the Bible is clear, God will judge that which and those who oppose Him.
For those who turn to God and trust in Him, He offers hope.
But make no mistake, the Bible is clear, God will judge that which is and those who are evil. The total content that remains in Nahum is all about that. All of what we have seen up to this point in the book of Nahum comes to a head in the remaining verses. This is a dark and heavy reality for Assyria, and the greatest hope for Judah.
Please understand that God sees the intent of your heart, whether it is one who He is calling to Himself or one that is rebelling against Him as their Lord.
Our culture as a whole and sadly many churches choose to turn a blind eye to sin and sinful practices in the name of tolerance and acceptance. They rightly trumpet, “Come as you are to us and find acceptance.” However, their motive is simply just to come, just to be a part of the group. It is the message that was wrongfully being preached to the church of Corinth in Paul’s day, “Bring with you and practice whatever you like. We accept you and it here.” You see, there is a difference between accepting the person and accepting or condoning their sin. The former we are commanded and compelled to do, but the latter we are warned clearly, not to do.
Christ certainly practiced the “come as you are” cheer. Christ welcomed all, but He never encouraged anyone to stay as they are. To the woman the Pharisees were going to stone He said, “…go and sin no more.” His point was, “come as you are, but don’t stay as you are.” “Come be a part of us so that you can be freed from the sin that you come with, the sin that weights you down so that you might experience freedom and blessing that only comes from living as God would have you live.”
Chapter 1 of Nahum ends by compelling Judah to celebrate what God was about to do for them as the people of God, God’s people. He was going to “cut off completely” the nation of Assyria that has oppressed them for so long.
Chapters 2 + 3 paint a picture of how thorough God’s judgement towards sin and sinners can be when they fail to repent and turn from their sin.
This Sunday and next will be heavy. It is a poetic section that is meant to feel dark and heavy. It is such, so that the people of God can find hope in God’s rescue from oppression and evil, and those who are rebelling against God and His people will be warned. God welcomes all who turn to Him, but absolutely will judge those who rebel against Him.
Either way, as this week’s title says, “God is Inescapable”

God will restore His devastated people (Nahum 2:1-2)

There is always hope for God's people

God will overcome those who rebel (Nahum 2:3-7)

There is no preparation for war that can be stronger than God v. 3
There is no battle technique that can overthrow God v. 4
Resisting God causes only chaos, confusion, suffering, and loss vv. 5-7

God will consume mankind’s greatest power (Nahum 2:8-13)

Are you one who turns to God, trusts His ways, and leans on His understanding? Or, are you one who strives to take everything into your own hands, do things your way, and trusts your methods and practices more than His?
For those who turn to God and trust in Him, He offers hope, but the Bible is clear, God will judge that which and those who oppose Him.
For those who turn to God and trust in Him, He offers hope.
But make no mistake, the Bible is clear, God will judge that which is and those who are evil. The total content that remains in Nahum is all about that. All of what we have seen up to this point in the book of Nahum comes to a head in the remaining verses. This is a dark and heavy reality for Assyria, and the greatest hope for Judah.
