7th Commandment
Notes
Transcript
This morning you have guessed it we are on to commandment number 7
You may get tired of the intro about the law but it is so very very important
And so today we will do things maybe a bit out of order
Rather than a normal intro to where we get to commandment number 7
I thought maybe lets start there and end with how that fits into the law
So commandment number 7
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
You guys are smart and can probably already get where we are going with this morning
But this seems pretty clear
We are to hold firm the sanctity of our marriage vows
Adultery is Engaging in sexual activity outside the bounds of a marriage relationship. Also: Adulterer; Faithlessness; Infidelity; Unfaithfulness
Is cheating on your spouse
This particular command shows the importance of the marriage vows
Those vows are so important and so powerful
I have done a few marriages but I don’t really like to do them because marriage is a sacred thing
I tell people that divorce is not option and that I will track them down and we will have a long talk
That marriage is for life
Not only does this command show us the importance of marriage that it is not something to be taken lightly
But it is built on a previous command
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
If we are not to cheat on God with other small g gods and we are not to cheat on God with an image of what we think God looks like
Then we are not to cheat on each other
Church marriage is important
Church just like we are not to cheat on God with anything we are not to cheat on our spouse with anything
And when or if you do it is called sin
Sin separates you from God
There is something between you and God that must be dealt with
17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
These are Jesus’s words about the law
If you will recall from last week as we began the 2nd tablet of commands
we see that Jesus fulfills the law by adding to it and making it more than just the physical side and adding the heart to the command as well
Just like last week Jesus fulfilled the command so does this particular command
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Jesus fulfills the command by adding a matter of the heart to the command
It is no longer just about the physical act of cheating that causes you to be guilty of adultery
But now if you lust after someone in your heart you stand guilty of adultery before God
Jesus is saying if you look at someone with lust for them
Lust is inordinate desire for something
It is not just the physical act of cheating anymore
But it is the wrong desires for someone who is not your spouse
So it is not the initial look at someone that is the problem
But
When you start to dwell or take a second look is when it becomes the problem
See how you can see someone passing by and then begin to dwell on them in your mind or heart in a lustful way that is when you have committed adultery
This is why church we are to guard about what we put into our body
23 Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life. 24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth And put devious speech far from you. 25 Let your eyes look directly ahead And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you. 26 Watch the path of your feet And all your ways will be established. 27 Do not turn to the right nor to the left; Turn your foot from evil.
we are to guard what we see on TV, what movies we watch, what music we listen to, what we see and saw and read on social media
Church we are to guard against that stuff because it can and sometimes does turn into adultery
We are to guard what we see and do on the internet
Church pornography is adultery
And adultery is sin and sin separates you from God
In our Bible study we talked about how some people don’t know they are in sin
This morning through the fulfillment of the law it points out the sin in your life and in my life
That is a purpose of the law to show us our need for a savior
To guide us into a relationship with The savior
That savior is Jesus Christ
Jesus came to deal with the sin problem
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
John McArthur 2 Corinthians 5:21
“The Greatest Gospel verse in the Bible, 2 Corinthians 5:21.
He made Him who knew no sin, sin for us.
That we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.
Let me unpack those 15 Greek words
He, God made Jesus sin.
What do you mean He made Jesus sin?
Only in one sense
He treated Him as if He had committed Every Sin ever Committed by Every Person who would ever believe though in fact He committed none of them.
Hanging on the cross He was Holy Harmless Undefiled
Hanging on the cross He was a spotless Lamb
He was never for a split second a sinner
He is Holy God on the cross
But God is treating Him, I’ll put it more practically
As if He lived my life
God punished Jesus for my sin
Turns right around and treats me as if I lived His life
That’s the great doctrine of substitution
And what you get is complete forgiveness
covered by the Righteousness of Jesus Christ
When He looks at the cross He sees you and when he looks at you He sees Christ”
Church that is the good news of the Gospel of Jesus
This is what happened to save you and I from our sin
This is why church we don’t have to stay in our sin
Jesus illustrates what it looks like to stop and turn from sin
Because we are to repent from the sin in our life
29 “If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 “If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.
Church to repent means that sometimes we have to take drastic measures to protect ourselves
Sometimes we have to sacrifice having a social media account, or sacrifice watching a certain movie
But do we really actually miss out on anything it if only leads us down a path of sin
We don’t
We aren’t missing out on anything when we don’t have internet
We aren’t missing anything when we don’t watch certain movies or TV shows
We aren’t missing anything when we run after Jesus
So this morning as we move to our time of invitation
This is your opportunity to respond to God accordingly
Maybe you don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus and this morning you understand that you are a sinner in need of a savior
There will be people down front to speak with you
Or maybe you are here this morning and understand you are guilty of sin before God this morning
And you want to come to altar and spend time in prayer repenting before God
Or maybe you just need to spend sometime in prayer at the altar this morning
The altar is open
