John 20:19 - 23
19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.
21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
RECEIVE YE THE HOLY GHOST
Today we will take a look at a time in
the apostles lives that was critical to
the ministry that they shared with the
world. They shared the Gospel of
Jesus Christ that we have faith in and
salvation through. Without what Jesus
does to them here in these scriptures
they would not have been effective
witnesses of the cross.
19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
When this appearance occur? It was
the same day that he rose from the
dead, being the first day of the week,
the day after the Jewish sabbath, at a
private meeting of the disciples. For
they had gather together for fear of the
Jews that had crucified Jesus. *
And while the door was shut and locked
Jesus stood among them. This showed
the power and authority of his
resurrected body.*
His first words to them were, Peace be
unto you. This was a conventional
greeting doing their time. *
20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.
Jesus gives them infallible proof of his
resurrection by showing the scars in
his hands and his side. And giving
them hope because he is showing
himself alive. *
21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
Jesus speaks peace to them again to
calm their excitement. Then He
recommissioned the disciples as His
apostles. He was sending them as His
representatives, as the Father had sent
Him (cf. 17:18). They were sent with
His authority to preach, teach, and do
miraculous signs (Matt. 28:16–20; Luke 24:47–49). *

22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
Why did Jesus breath on them and tell
them to receive the Holy Ghost? We
need to remember that there is power
in the breath of God. Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. *
Do you remember Ezekiel chapter 37?
Where God took the prophet Ezekiel in
the Spirit to the valley of dry bones. (Tell the story)
Jesus breathing on them would lay a
recognizable foundation for the
incoming of the promise from the
Father that had not yet filled any of
them. As long as Jesus was with them
them the Holy Ghost would not come.
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary (20:21–23)
This reception of the Spirit was in
anticipation of the day of Pentecost
and should be understood as a
partial limited gift of knowledge,
understanding, and empowerment
until Pentecost, 50 days later.
23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
By the preaching of the Gospel there
will be those that will believe and will
accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior
their sins will be forgiven, laid aside,
even put away. But the one that hears
and does not believe they will not be
forgiven. For there is no forgiveness
without Godly sorrow that worketh
repentance.
Acts 19:1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7 And all the men were about twelve.
