Introduction

Luke 5:33–39 ESV
And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’ ”

Explanation

Luke 5:33–35 ESV
And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.”
The Pharisees are still trying to figure Jesus out and possibly cast a little shade on him.
They ask why John the Baptist’s disciples fast and pray while Jesus’ disciples eat and drink.
Maybe they are still a little mad that Jesus was at a party with tax collectors and sinners.
If Jesus is supposedly better/greater than John the Baptist then why were Jesus’ disciples supposedly less disciplined than John the Baptist.
Jesus responds, cryptically, “Wedding guests don’t fast when the bridegroom is with them. They fast when the bridegroom is no longer with them.” What is Jesus saying.
A Jewish wedding had three steps:
Contract - Parents agreed to the wedding.
Preparation - Groom returns to his fathers house to prepare a place for his bride. The bride would wait patiently for him to return with a place prepared for her.
Celebration - The actual wedding and marriage takes place.
Jesus says, “John the Baptist fasts to get to God. He fasts, prays, lives radically in the desert, and teaches his disciples to do the same so that they can know God.”
I am God, and my disciples do not have to do any of these things to have access to me.
Luke 5:36 ESV
He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old.
Jesus is saying, “I am something completely new.”
I am not a teacher.
I am not a rabbi.
I am not a prophet.
I am not a king or military leader.
I am God, and I am doing something new here.
