Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
This message is a piggy back off of last weeks message, Here we find Paul as he has in other epistles has written instruct the church of what the Christian home ought to look like
First thing we see is a message to the wives, Next we see Paul address The Husbands, then the children then the bondservant then the masters
So lets start with
The message to the wives
1.Wives are to submit to their own husbands
I get it this is a counter cultural issue, We do not like the word to submit or to surrender, we think of ourselves as individual agents , accountable to nothing but our own self and actions, But my dear brethren this is the lie of the devil that goes vastly against scripture,If we love Christ if He is our lord then we submit to Him we surrender to Him, How can we surrender to one we have not seen if we will not surrender to whom we have seen. This is what Jesus means by saying why do you call me Lord but not do what I say
He is telling us in His Holy Word His desire for us, You see the role of a marriage is a depiction of His relationship with his church with you ,
If you cannot submit to His word in your everyday life how can we submit to Him on eternal things?
He says this in various places in scripture its a repeated theme lets look at a few
There is over one hundred verses about us submitting to one another and to Christ in Scripture
here is a few
Ephesians 5:22-24
Ephesians 5:22-24
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
1 Peter 3:1
1 Peter 3:1
Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives,
expound
Genesis 3:16
Genesis 3:16
To the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.”
from the beginning
listen to how the NLT puts it
16 Then he said to the woman,
“I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy,
and in pain you will give birth.
And you will desire to control your husband,
but he will rule over you.[a]”
In the greek Septuagint the Word is Zeloo
Which means to be jealous to the point of control
in the hebrew it means the be zealous for to envy that may lead to control
Hebrews 13:17
Hebrews 13:17
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.
How many people leave jobs leave opportunities leave relationships because they will not submit only to find out later it was unprofitable for them
James 4:7
James 4:7
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
The devil will not flee from you until you submit fully and totally to God through Christ, If you hang on to even one thing you are giving a door for satan to attack you at
Then of course we See Jesus even submit His will to the Father a perfect example for us as we strive to be christlike
Luke 22:42
Luke 22:42
saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
WE must not destain the idea of surrender of submittance we must call upon God amd plead with him that he give us grace that He may strip the worldly flesh the Worldly understanding from us that we ill by his grace submit to one another Wives submit to Husbands and for us to submitt to God through Christ.
Now to the Husbands
Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.
This goes directly ith His Epistle to Ephesus
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
1 Peter 3:7
1 Peter 3:7
Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
To the Children
Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
WE are to obey as Children, children you are called to obey your parents as this is pleasing to God
Fathers listen the duty of being the spiritual leader is also to be the main disciplinary figure, but do it with love
His message move n to Slaves and Masters
today it may be for you any position of authority over you or under you employees boss and so on
Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God.
Paul moves to our attitude and our manner of servanthood should be filled with prayer and thanksgiving That the Kingdom Of Christ may be spread for His Glory
Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving; praying at the same time for us as well, that God will open up to us a door for the word, so that we may speak forth the mystery of Christ, for which I have also been imprisoned; that I may make it clear in the way I ought to speak. Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.
Paul then goes on to his final greetings there is one text I want you to see before we close this chapter though He tells the church to share this letter
When this letter is read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and you, for your part read my letter that is coming from Laodicea. Say to Archippus, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.”
He wants us to take what we have learned here over the last few months and live it out and to share it that we too may fulfill it . Let us Pray
