Pentateuch or Books of the Law (written by Moses)

Genesis: Primeval History (Creation, Flood, Tower of Babel) and the Patriarchs (Abraham > Isaac > Jacob > Joseph)
Exodus: God frees the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt using Moses as a leader, the journey through the wilderness, and receiving the law at Mt. Sinai
Leviticus: Laws, particularly concerning Levites and worship
Numbers: Genealogies, laws, and the story of Israel not trusting God enough to enter the land and as punishment wandering int he desert for 40 years.
Deuteronomy: Preparing to enter the land and the law being repeated.

Judges: Living in the land in a pattern of sin, judgement, and deliverance.
Ruth: Story of two widows and what true covenant living looks like.
1 Samuel: The leadership of Samuel, the first king Saul, God’s rejection of Saul, and Saul’s persecution of David.
2 Samuel: David’s kingship.
1 Kings: Solomon’s kingship, the creation of the temple, and the civil war.
2 Kings: The divided kingdom and the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel to Assyria and then the fall of the Southern kingdom of Judah to Babylon.
1 Chronicles: Covers the same history as 1 Kings but more selectively and with additional emphasis on genealogies (the first 9 chapters cover a complete genealogical history of Israel), priests, and worship. Tradition says Ezra is th author.
2 Chronicles: Covers the same history as 2 Kings but more selectively with additional emphasis on priests and worship.
Ezra: History and genealogies of the return of the Jews from Babylon and the rebuilding of the temple and religious reform.
Nehemia: History of rebuilding the temple and the wall around the city and religious reform.
Esther: Story of queen Esther saving Jewish people left behind after others returned to Israel.
Job: A difficult to place historically story of one man tested by Satan.

Psalms: A collection of 150 songs of joy, laments, blessings, and thanksgivings that Israel sang to God in praise. Written by David and various authors)
Proverbs: A collection of wise sayings of Solomon that teach wisdom to God’s people. (Written by Solomon and various authors)
Ecclesiastes: A philosophical collection of proverbs, maxims, and sayings that explore the meaning of life and offer wisdom to others seeking truth in God. Faces the issue of how we can find meaning in life in light of the seemingly futile nature of everything. One must be careful in reading Ecclesiastes since some passages read in isolation can be misunderstood. (Written by Solomon)
