What are some of your favorite stories from the Gospels?

When we think of the story’s of Jesus what are our favorites? Are they the Miracles? Are they the Parables? Are they when Jesus is teaching about the deep things?
The truth is we often gravitate toward the Miracles. The actions themselves.

Why do we like to focus on the Miracles of Jesus?

Luke chapter 5 is the start of the Miracles and Teaching theme of the Gospel of Luke This goes all the way to chapter 19. This is also where we see a significant shift from ministry in the Synagogue to outdoor ministry. This is often because the Synagogues would not welcome him or throw him out but Jesus ministry takes a marked change to being in a more public setting.
John Wesley once said “Field Preaching Saves souls”
That is a powerful statement that lines up with what Jesus approach and is something that we have to take a look at.

Read Luke 5:1-11

What kind of life do you think Simon lived after hearing this story?

Follow up question. Why do you think he felt so compelled to confess his sins?
Simon had no signs of living a life that is controversial or in sin. Yet he felt so challenged by what Jesus was saying he...
Luke 5:8 NIV
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”

Why do you think Simon Peter said he was a sinful man?

IT is when we come in contact with the Holy that we realize how woefully sinful we are.
Let’s go back and read a verse again and i want to talk about what it means.
Luke 5:4 NIV
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

Have you ever experienced Deep water before?

Why are people often afraid of deep water or open water?
Cliff jumping. IT took a long time for me to come up. I also have a fear of the water.
Simon Peter is finding himself in deep water. Into teritory he was not expecting to go but he was willing. He was willing to go out and follow the instruction of JEsus.
Now he finds himself here
Luke 5:10–11 NIV
10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
Simon and the other disciples have made a choice they had to change everything about who they are. They are walking out and starting a new life.

Has God ever asked you to change something in your life? What was it and how did it go?

Isaiah 6:1–10 NIV
1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” 9 He said, “Go and tell this people: “ ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ 10 Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”
