Verse 8

Abraham going out of a place- Gen. 12:1-3
Genesis 12:1–3 LSB
1 And Yahweh said to Abram, “Go forth from your land, And from your kin And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; 2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
In the promises of Gen 12 what are some things that you see and how they are fulfilled in Christ?
consider both Gal 3 and Eph 2 at this point, but could read later
God often calls His people to places that they did not expect or know where they were going. How many times do we make plans that never take place because something strange took place or we were obviously led to something else.
When we are in these times of uncertainty, how are we to live by? by faith-next verse

Verse 9

Remind of the important of context and what this means to the Jewish convert who has now know home and are not in the cities of Israel any longer. This make the statement of why Paul is dwelling on Abraham even more important.
How did Abraham live? By faith (Romans 1:17)
What does sojourn mean? to spend a certain length of time or reside in a place or community; reside temporarily or as an alien..
dwelt in tents meaning that their citizenshio was never really in the place they were.
heirs of the same promise. What again was the promise? (consider reading again gal 3 and eph 2)

verse 10

he was looking for a city whose architect is God. Where else have we seen the language of this applied before in this book?- Hebrews 3.
Where is this speaking about?- John 2:19
John 2:19 NASB95
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
Hebrews 8:5 NASB95
5 who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, “See,” He says, “that you make all things according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.”
architect and builder- talk about the difference of these two things.

verse 11

Genesis 17:19 NASB95
19 But God said, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
(Gal. 4:22-.)
So we are to have faith in the promises of God instead of trying to fulfill them by our own means like Abraham and haggar and ishmel did---works based salvation verse faith in Christ.

Verse 12

Genesis 15:1–5 NASB95
1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.” 2 Abram said, “O Lord God, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Since You have given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir.” 4 Then behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.” 5 And He took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”
again reference gal 3 and eph 2

Verse 13

all died in faith. (do we live in faith today)
the promises had not yet been realized yet they died in faith in the promised messiah welcoming them from a distance
thus we see that they were strangers on earth
What does this teach us for our lives??
