Translation Jonah 1

1. And the word of the LORD came to Jonah, the son of Amity, saying,

2. “(you) stand up, (you) go to Nineveh the great city and announce upon her! For their evil [has] gone up before me.”

3. And Jonah stood up to run away to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. And he went down to Jaffa (Joppa) and found a ship going to Tarshish, he gave payment, and went down in it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

4. And the LORD hurled a great wind towards the sea, and a great tempest came on the sea and the ship consider to be destroyed.

5. And the sailors became afraid, and each (they) man called for help to his God, and they threw the pieces of equipment which [was] in the ship to the sea to lighten [it] for them. And Jonah went down to remote part of the ship and he laid down slept deeply.

6. And the captain of the rope approached towards him, and said to him, “why are you sleeping? (you) stand up, (you) call to your god, perhaps the god will bear us in mind, and we will not perish.”

7. And they said (a man to his friend), “(you) come, we will cast lots and we will know who cause this evil to us.” And they casted lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
