Job 1

Job 1:1–5 ESV
There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east. His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
Job is undeniably a slightly confusing book of the Bible, not that it can’t be understood but that it may take a bit longer than other areas. Here in the first verses the stage is set for Job, we see some crucial information about him and his way of life. What we learn is that he takes God and the things of God seriously. He works diligently to walk in the way that God would have him.
The first description of Job is that he was blameless and upright. He walked with integrity that came from a wholehearted commitment of following God. He was also in the habit of making ethically right decisions. Just think of what society would look like if more people would live in this way. Choosing the good because it is the good and doing it even if no one else was watching.
The second description is that he feared God and turned away from evil. The fear of God is something that is often misunderstood. In the fear of God we are afraid that we will get the judgment that we deserve in one sense but in another sense we as Christians are afraid of displeasing God. We want to have a reverent awe of God and walk in that way. To be known as someone that fears God is something that we should all desire.
Job was a faithful man that lived in the way that we all should. Though he was still an imperfect sinner he habitually lived in the proper manner. Could any of these things be said of you? Would anybody else say these things of you? Though Job is a more difficult book we can easily see who Job is, he is a man of God and in the same way we should seek to be people of God that seek to live upright and blameless lives.
