Focus On The Who
Focus On The Who
Accountability:
Did you write your intentional habits down?
2. How have you been growing yourself since last time?
3. What has been the biggest challenge to your habits? Time? Energy? Consistency?
4. How have the habits brought about short term change?
5. What did you do today to grow?
Recap:
Being intentional with our growth
Are you waiting for change to happen or are you changing things in you
For God to use us in a bigger capacity we have to create room for growth
Change the way we think (Perspective change)
It’s going to take sacrifice
We’re going to have to be faithful
“Don’t ask how long it will take ask how deep you can go”
I want to talk about your thinking tonight
How many of you have gone down endeavors for change that have left your frustrated and right back into the same rut that you were in before?
Maybe you’ve tried to lose weight or become more healthy
Maybe you’ve committed to reading your bible daily and then a month goes by and your still back in the same spot (I’ll catch that proverb next month when it comes around again
The first step to changing I mentioned last week and that
One of the biggest if not the biggest adversaries to change is wrong thinking
We have to change the way we think:
7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
“Eat and drink!” he says to you,
But his heart is not with you.
You’ve tried this all before:
You’ve tried willpower and that waned
You’ve tried motivation but that depleted as quickly as it came
A lot of times change isn’t lasting because we focus on what we do, rather than what you think of You
Maybe you’ve tried to change of emotions, how long did that last?
If the level of our leadership is determined by our habits, How do we make our habits stick?
James Clear (Atomic Habits) says, “It’s hard to change your habits if you never change the underlying belief that led you to past behavior. You have a new goal and a new plan, but you haven’t changed who you are.”
“To change what you do, you need to first change what you think of you.” -Craig Groeschel
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
The Identity model of decision making:
James March (Stanford University professor)
When faced with a decision or making a choice, we essentially(and subconsciously) ask ourselves three questions:
Who am I?
What kind of situation is this
What would someone like me do in this situation
How you identity is the primary reason you make a decision
Think about it:
The way you dress
The way you vote
The way you stand one way or another politically
We should know this just as well as anybody cause our identity has to be shaped on the word of God
How you see yourself determines the outcome of your decisions
Matty Matheson:
Chef
High school drop out
Quite culinary school to tour with a metal band a week before graduation
Big Partier
Wanted to go harder than anyone else
Has a heart attack at 29
Doesn’t stop him
Living a lifestyle that wasn’t sustainable
Intervention
Sobriety
He thought that everyone was relying on him to be the “Party guy”
When he got sober everyone around him was just waiting for Him to stop
The person He thought he had to be to please others
Was the person that others were waiting to give up or die so they could stop too
Often time the negative thoughts about ourselves are the ones that dominate us
The way you see yourself will determine how you answer the major questions in your life
When you make the wrong decisions or choose an easier direction, what are the thoughts you have that lead to the decision?
To change what you do, Change what you think
What are behaviors you need to stop doing?
1.
2.
3.
What are behaviors you need to start doing?
1.
2.
3.
We can read the books and go to seminars, sit here and listen to this
We can get information, and inspiration without results if we don’t see ourselves differently
The enemy wants you to focus on the negative:
You blew it
You’re a bad parent
You’ve already tried this and it didn’t work the last time
You’re not smart enough
This is too hard for you
You haven’t accomplished anything
10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.
You’re not who satan says you are! The Devil is a liar
Who does God say you are:
Forgiven
Precious
New Creation
Free
Friend of God
God’s masterpiece
Fearfully and wonderfully made
Chosen
Redeemed
Blessed
Prosperous
Chosen
Able to do all things
I know you know and understand all this stuff but do you believe it about yourself?
Believe God’s truths about yourself
The worlds identity isn’t based on truths that’s why it fleeting
The Future you:
Exercise-
Who is someone you look up too?
Who is someone you view as a role model in your life?
Who do you look too as a hero?
Keep that person in mind
Mathew McCoughnehey was asked when he was 15, who his hero was
He said my Hero is me in 10 years
When he turned 25 he was asked the same question he said again him in 10 year
Who do you want to in 5 years 10 years?
A lot of time we look at heroes or role models in our lives and we look at their fruit but don’t examine what it took them to get there
Why are our heroes and role models living out our dreams?
Because we don’t make the sacrifices that it takes to get there
Hal Hershfield, a psychologist at UCLA, tells us that having a “future self” that we plan on becoming- will change how we live today
Let your “future self” determine your decisions for today
13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you.
What does your future self look like?
A true man or woman of God
A better husband or wife
A better mom or dad
A bold witness for Christ
Walking in complete healing
A radically generous giver
A person who is healthy: Spiritually, mentally, physically
Be the man or woman God is calling you to be
Don’t sacrifice your future self for the wrong decisions today
Reflection:
1. What are character traits of people you look up to?
2. Make a list of Characteristics you’d like to see yourself posses in 5 years
3. Write down three scriptures that you are standing on for change in your life
4. Create a target for the person you want to be
5. What are intentional habits you can create to become your own hero?
6. Tell yourself and God who you want to become over the next 5 years
7. Pray and ask God to help commit these intentional practices to your heart
