Intro: How does the Father give us salvation?
I. God gives us the Son
The crowd comes looking for Jesus (22-25)
You dont’ want a sign from me to believe, you want food (26)
Seek the bread that leads to eternal life (27)
This comes to us through the SOno f Man from the Father (27)
Well, how can we work for this bread? (28)
God works in us to produce faith so we believe and receive the Son (29)
What will you do for us so that we could believe (30), after all, Moses gave us bread (31)
It was my Father who gave and gives you true bread (32-33)
Give us this bread always
I am the bread of life (35; Isaiah 55:1-2), I alone can satisfy you roul and make you whole
Look on me (40; John 3:14-16)
II. By giving us to the Son
You don’t believe
but the one who does come to me is someone who the Father gives me (37)
I will never cast him out (37)
I came to do his will (38)
This is his will, that I should lose none of him who he has given me (39)
BUt I will raise him up on the last day (39)
salvation from beginning to end is the work of God (Eph 1:3-4)
My salvation is as secure as it could be
This is because if I am saved, I am the gift of the Father to teh Son and the Son is not in the business of losing the things that the Father gives him
(Big Idea Reveal) This passage teaches us that God has chosen to give me Christ by giving me to Christ
This is called the covenant of redemption. It is that God the Father promised the Son before time began to give him a people, and God the Son promised to render unto the Father perfect o bedience, even obedience unto death. And it is in the marvelous confluence of those two promises that I am saved. You are fundamentally saved, not only because God has promised you he will do this, but because he has promised himself he has done this. And if God has never lied to you, he never lies to himself.
Application
My salvation is a gift of God to God. <This should make me humble and thankful>
All of salvation from beginning to end is of God <Phil 1:6>
Come to Christ! <make the appeal>
Jesus does not lose those who the Father has given him <Do you think there is any way that I could possibly be saved?>
Don’t spoil your appetite <Learn to keep yourself from things that would dampen your affection for Jesus Christ; Heb 12:1-2>
Eat well <Bible reading, church service, rich worship music, prayer>
Train yourself to think eternally, not merely physically <Matt 6:19-21>
This should make us hopeful <your resurrection is as certain as Christ’s>
