ex 20:14 ““You shall not commit adultery.”
Job 31:9-11 ““If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor’s door, then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down on her. For that would be a heinous crime; that would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges;
for a long time the violation of this covenant resulted in a legal judgement of some type
capital offense level adultry ended in execution.
But what should our motives for purutiy be?
well, obviously - keeping the law of God is one of those things
Other than that?
prov 22:14 “The mouth of forbidden women is a deep pit; he with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it.”
prov 9:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”
Joseph appeals tot eh fear of the Lord -
Gen 39:9 “He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?””
Mal 3:5 ““Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.”
God is WITNESS against these things - they don’t happen outside of his purview in other words. He SEES.
Sex within the context of Biblical marriage, God is witness to as well, and it is good. Obedient. ccording to his design.
Also - salvation itself - 1 Cor 6:9 “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,”
Prov 9:13-18 “The woman Folly is loud; she is seductive and knows nothing. She sits at the door of her house; she takes a seat on the highest places of the town, calling to those who pass by, who are going straight on their way, “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” And to him who lacks sense she says, “Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.”
Speaking of the Forbidden Woman - Prov 7:27 “Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.”
Hell itself.
SLAVERY is also an option here - Hos 4:10-11 “They shall eat, but not be satisfied; they shall play the whore, but not multiply, because they have forsaken the Lord to cherish whoredom, wine, and new wine, which take away the understanding.”
and the Bible refers to men in this bondage as dumb animals - Jer 5:8 “They were well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for his neighbor’s wife.”
no self control. and a beast has no capacity for empathy, no regard for his partners or the waste he lays to their lives.
What about REPUTATION?
Prov 6:32-33 “He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself. He will get wounds and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be wiped away.”
And Financial ruin
Prov 6:26 “for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, but a married woman hunts down a precious life.”
Prov 5:10 “lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner,”
And not only financial ruin but it will lead to eventual physical ruin as well
prov 5:11 “and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed,”
LOTS OF REASONS FOR SEXUAL PURITY.
But how do we make sure we do it? What are the means to that end?
FIRST - watch your theology
Prov 16:6 “By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil.”
if you’re not believing the Lord - if you’re not trusting his promises - chances are strong you’re going to regret it later in life.
Second - guard your heart bro.
matt 15:19 “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.”
Song of Solomon 8:4 “I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases.”
THIRD - Love your wife.
1 Cor 7:2-3 “But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband.”
FOURTH - watch your eyes.
2 Peter 2:14 “They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!”
Job 31:1 ““I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I gaze at a virgin?”
FIFTH - listen to wise parents
Prov 23:26-28 “My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. For a prostitute is a deep pit; an adulteress is a narrow well. She lies in wait like a robber and increases the traitors among mankind.”
SIXTH - CULTIVATE SELF CONTROL
Jer 5:7-8 ““How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me and have sworn by those who are no gods. When I fed them to the full, they committed adultery and trooped to the houses of whores. They were well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for his neighbor’s wife.”
Ezek 16:49 “Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.”
1 Cor 9:27 “But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”
