This morning we are going to talk about the power in the name of Jesus! There are four different words for the would power one Hebrew that is Koach is ability, three in Greek Exousia is authority, Dunamis is great might, Kratos which is effective power and Ischus which is God’s absolute power and authority.
Now each of these words for power are powerful in and of themselves and carry great significance so let us look at each word as we get started this morning. It is important for us to understand that we have been given power in and through the name of Jesus!
Koach
You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
Koach / ko-akh is vigor, strength, force, capacity, power, wealth, means or substance to do whether mental, physical or spiritual.
Exousia
and to have power to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons:
Exousia / ex-oo-see-ah is the authority or right to act, ability, privilege, capacity and delegated authority of Jesus.
Dunamis
And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
Dunamis / doo-nam-is means energy, power, might, great force, great ability and strength it is the ability through divine power to overcoming all resistance.
Kratos
who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
Kratos / krat-oss is dominion, strength, manifested power the signifies exerted strength in reigning authority.
Ischus
and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might
Ischus / is-khoos this would be God’s absolute strength, power, might, force and ability toward us!
Each of these power words should help us to understand the power that has been handed, passed down to us from Jesus.
Jesus Hands Down Power and Authority
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Jesus here gives us the authoritative power to preach, teach, baptize and to make disciples in all the world.
The Amplified version says “All authority (all power of absolute rule) in Heaven and on earth has been given to Me!”
Jesus power and authority was given to him by God!
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Power Given Through Prayer
And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, “ ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’— for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
Power to Heal in Jesus Name
But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.
Power to Address your Accusers
And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Power to Take Down Our Enemies
You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob! Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah
Do Greater Things Than These
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
We Can Do All Things In Christ
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
In and through Jesus Christ and His authority and power we have been the ability to walk in that same power!
The biggest question we have is do we believe it and are we willing to walk in it and use it for His glory and not for our glory satisfaction?
This power and authority has been handed down to us who live and walk according to His Word!!!
