You are free from the power of sin
English Standard Version (Chapter 17)

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can know it?

“I the LORD search the heart and test the mind,to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.

This is what the bible says, but man does not believe this.
Man says sure I lie and cheat. I will crush anyone who gets in my way, but I am a good man, I have a good heart.

The heart is deceitful above all things,

and desperately sick.

Man says I am sure that I have a good heart.
Man can do all manner of wickedness, but still they have a good heart.
A man could kill, torture, fornicate, and betray, but still, they will tell you to your face that they have a good heart.

Who can know it?

Man says that I may reject the means of grace but I have a good heart I know my heart.
We have two statements of human life. Only one can be true.
On one hand we have the bible, and on the other we have flesh and blood.
God says one thing and man says another.
I submit to you that the heart is deceitful above all things, and not only sick, but desperately sick.
And it must not be watered down to figurative because it sounds hard, and leaves you know room for boosting, because it is imperative that we understand our natural state.
English Standard Version (Chapter 16)
Man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.
Unless you know the natural state of our hearts you will never love Christ in sincerity, you will never see how necessary it was that he suffer and die on the cross to deliver our souls from hell, and return us to right standing with God.

First I will prove to you the truth of how the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick, next I will show you how the Lord knows what is within you, and then I will show you the only solution we have if you would be saved.

I pray that in your modern lives you will let the Lord change you, but this will never be unless you are convinced of sin and of that you will never be convinced unless we see that the root of all sin is inside of us.
As for the wickedness of man we look at the scripture
Genesis 6:5 (ESV)
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination from mans heart is evil from his youth.

20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

Psalm 14:2–3 (ESV)
The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man,
to see if there are any who understand,
who seek after God.
They have all turned aside; together they have become filthy;
there is none who does good,
not even one.

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”

They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds;

there is none who does good.

How then can man be in the right before God?

How can he who is born of woman be pure?

5  Behold, even the moon is not bright,

and the stars are not pure in his eyes;

6  how much less man, who is a maggot,

and the son of man, who is a worm!”

English Standard Version (Chapter 15)

For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.

This truth about the human heart is ultimately why people don't want to go to church.
But I will go deeper.
Let’s start from the beginning.
Before the flood.
The Garden of Eden was on the earth
Adam was alive
They knew God existed..
They knew of the existed of the supernatural.
Noah preached to them for one hundred years that the flood was coming and not one of them listened.
And after God uses water from heaven to kill them all, man kind still didn't learn.
You would think that they would run from sin, but no
Think about that.
God created a flood so big that evidence of that flood is still in the rings of Saturn and that still wasn't enough.
Next we have the tower of babel
Not even a generation later they tried to unite the world into a one world government and God split the languages of the entire world, in the blink of an eye.
You would think that would be enough.
It wasn't.
Next we have sodom and Gomorrah
God destroyed them because of total depravity
Abraham was key in God’s plan of Salvation and he was a liar.
The patriarchs of the children of Israel, the family Christ was born from sold their brother into slavery.
They go into Egypt, and God parts the red sea for them to escape and they still hand themselves over to sin willingly.
And when Christ came to the earth to free them, they killed him
I hope this drives home the power of sin over the hearts of man.

How can we who died to sin still live in it?

I tell you this because knowing your natural state helps you.
First it helps you see people in your lives for who they really are, and it helps you become who you really are.
But who are you in Christ.
