Call to Worship (adapted from Psalm 68)
Sing to God! Sing praises to the Lord!
We’ll raise our voices to worship the Lord our God
for this Holy One gives power and strength to all who praise the Lord.
We delight in knowing God gives a home to the desolate,
and we rejoice when God leads the imprisoned to prosperity.
Blessed be the Lord our God.
Opening Prayer
Gracious God, we’ve come to offer you our praise, and worship you,
grateful for the ways you continue to bless us, lead us, challenge us,
and love us.
Receive all we lay before you in this hour, even as you open the way for us
to grow in our lives as followers and disciples of our resurrected Lord, Jesus, the Christ. AMEN
Offertory
As we prepare to give our tithes and offerings, let us remember the words of the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 9:7, "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
Today, as we reflect on the love and sacrifice of mothers, let us also express our gratitude to God by giving generously. Our offerings are not just a financial transaction; they are a symbol of our trust in God's provision and our commitment to support the work of His kingdom.
May we give with open hearts and cheerful spirits, knowing that our offerings contribute to the ministry of the church and the impact it has on the lives of others. Let us give with thankfulness, knowing that God blesses us abundantly and multiplies our offerings for His glory.
May the ushers now come forward to receive our offerings. Let us give joyfully, knowing that we are partnering with God in His work and sowing seeds that will bear fruit in due time. May our giving reflect our love for God and our desire to honor Him in all that we do.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Prayer
Lord of amazing visions, prepare our hearts and our spirits this day to receive your glad tidings of an Advocate. Help make us ready to be your disciples in all that we do, say, and think. For we ask this in the name of our beloved Savior Jesus Christ. AMEN.
2 Timothy 1:5-7 New International Version
5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
Introduction:
Mothers play a unique and significant role in the lives of their children. They have the extraordinary ability to nurture, shape, and influence their children's development in profound ways. A mother's love, care, guidance, and sacrifice lay the foundation for a child's physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The impact of a mother's presence, words, and actions can leave an indelible mark on a child's character, values, and worldview. Mothers have the power to instill confidence, inspire greatness, and cultivate a deep sense of love, security, and belonging in their children. Their influence extends far beyond the early years of childhood and continues to shape the lives of their children into adulthood. Recognizing and appreciating the significance of mothers is a way to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions they make to their children's lives and to society.
I. A Mother's Faith (Verse 5) -I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
Paul commends Timothy for his genuine and sincere faith, acknowledging that it was first nurtured and passed down to him through his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice.
Timothy was a young disciple of Paul, who was raised in a Jewish and Gentile mixed-marriage household. His mother, Eunice, was a Jewish believer, while his father was a Greek (Acts 16:1). The faith mentioned here refers to the Christian faith and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
The verse highlights the significant role that Timothy's grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice, played in shaping his faith. Their sincere faith and commitment to Christ had a lasting impact on Timothy. They likely taught him the Scriptures, modeled a life of faith, and instilled in him the values and principles of the Christian faith.
The passage emphasizes the transmission of faith from one generation to the next. Timothy's grandmother and mother passed down their faith to him, laying a strong foundation for his own faith journey. This underscores the importance of family and the vital role parents and grandparents can play in nurturing and passing on their faith to the next generation.
Paul expresses confidence that the same faith that resided in Lois and Eunice is now alive in Timothy. This continuity of faith highlights the enduring nature of genuine faith and its ability to be passed down through generations. It demonstrates the transformative power of a mother's faith and its lasting impact on her children.
The verse reminds us of the significant influence mothers and grandmothers can have in shaping the faith of their children and grandchildren. It underscores the importance of nurturing and modeling a sincere faith that leaves a legacy for future generations. It also encourages individuals to recognize and acknowledge the faith heritage they have received from their parents or grandparents, appreciating the impact it has had on their own spiritual journey. The role of Lois and Eunice in transmitting and nurturing the faith of Timothy, highlighting the enduring impact of a mother's faith on her children. It serves as a reminder of the significance of passing down the Christian faith to future generations and the profound influence a mother's faith can have on her family.
I. A Mother's Faith (Verse 5)
II. A Mother's Encouragement (Verse 6)-For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
The apostle Paul is writing this letter to Timothy, his beloved disciple and co-worker in the ministry. This letter is considered one of Paul's pastoral letters, offering guidance, encouragement, and exhortation to Timothy in his role as a young leader in the early Christian community.
Paul urges Timothy to "fan into flame" the gift of God within him. This refers to the spiritual gifts and calling that Timothy received through the laying on of Paul's hands, likely in the context of his ordination or commissioning for ministry. Paul encourages Timothy to nurture and develop these gifts, allowing them to flourish and be used effectively in service to God and others.
The phrase "the gift of God" signifies the divine endowment, which may refer to various spiritual gifts and abilities given by the Holy Spirit. Paul encourages Timothy not to neglect or underestimate these gifts but rather to actively cultivate and employ them in his ministry.
The mention of the laying on of hands indicates a significant event in Timothy's life, most likely his commissioning or ordination for ministry. This act symbolizes the impartation of spiritual authority, blessing, and empowerment for his specific role and responsibilities.
While this verse does not explicitly refer to "A Mother's Encouragement," we can draw a broader application in the context of maternal or parental influence. The verse underscores the importance of recognizing and nurturing the God-given gifts within oneself, just as a mother or parent might encourage and support their child in discovering and utilizing their talents and abilities. It reminds individuals of the need to actively develop and utilize their spiritual gifts for the benefit of the Church and the world.
The verse reminds individuals of the significance of nurturing and utilizing their spiritual gifts, similar to the encouragement and support a mother or parent provides. It serves as a reminder to embrace and employ the gifts God has bestowed upon us for His purposes and the advancement of His Kingdom.
I. A Mother's Faith (Verse 5)
II. A Mother's Encouragement (Verse 6)
III. A Mother's Spirit of Power, Love, and Self-Control (Verse 7)-For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
This verse is part of Paul's letter to Timothy, his protégé and fellow worker in the ministry. Paul writes to encourage and strengthen Timothy in his faith and ministry, reminding him of the power and resources available to him through the Holy Spirit.
The phrase "a spirit of power" refers to the Holy Spirit's empowering presence within believers. It signifies the strength, boldness, and confidence that God grants to His children. This power enables them to overcome fear, face challenges, and fulfill their calling in service to God.
The "spirit of love" refers to the presence and influence of the Holy Spirit, who imparts God's love to believers. This love is not merely human affection but divine love, characterized by selflessness, compassion, and sacrificial care for others. It empowers believers to love God and love their neighbors as themselves.
The phrase "a spirit of self-control" speaks of the Holy Spirit's work in developing and strengthening the virtue of self-control or discipline within believers. It enables them to resist temptations, exercise restraint over their desires, and make wise and godly choices.
The verse emphasizes that the spirit given by God is not one of fear or timidity. Instead, God equips His children with power, love, and self-control. Fear is not from God but is often a hindrance to fulfilling God's purposes. The Spirit of God enables believers, including mothers, to rise above fear, trusting in God's strength, love, and wisdom.
In the context of motherhood, this verse highlights the vital role of a mother in nurturing a spirit of power, love, and self-control in her children. A godly mother can instill confidence, love, and discipline in her children through her words, actions, and guidance. She can help her children understand and rely on God's empowering presence, cultivating a life marked by courage, compassion, and wise decision-making.
Believers, including mothers, we have been given a spirit of power, love, and self-control through the indwelling Holy Spirit. It encourages mothers to foster these qualities in themselves and impart them to their children, guiding them to live fearlessly, love wholeheartedly, and exercise self-discipline. By relying on God's empowering Spirit, mothers can influence their children to live according to God's purposes and reflect His character in their lives.
Conclusion

Reflect on the love, sacrifices, and guidance they have provided throughout your life. Take the time to express your gratitude and let them know how much they mean to you.
For the mothers among us, I want to challenge you to continue investing in your children's lives. Your role is vital, and the impact you have on their spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being cannot be overstated. Keep nurturing their faith, encouraging their dreams, and instilling godly values in their hearts.

Embrace the opportunity to be a beacon of light, love, and strength in your children's lives. Be intentional in your words and actions, consistently pointing them to Christ and equipping them to fulfill their God-given purpose.
Even during challenges and struggles, know that God's grace is sufficient. Lean on Him for strength, wisdom, and guidance as you navigate the joys and trials of motherhood. Trust that He will equip you with everything you need to raise children who love and serve Him wholeheartedly.
May we all honor and appreciate the mothers in our midst, and may mothers continue to embrace their calling with faith, perseverance, and unwavering love. Together, let us celebrate the beautiful legacy of motherhood and the profound impact it has on our lives and the Kingdom of God.
