Week 1: Overview
Week 2: Moses showing how different Jehovah is for all other supposed gods, how intentional God was in creating man
Week 3: Sin - we were made in the image of God to spread the image of God over the whole earth but SIN changed that! BUT God always has a plan of redemption!
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Genesis chapters 4 and 5
Genesis is about tracing the two lines of children that would come from Adam and Eve.
Godly line of Seth
Godless line of Cain
Beginning:
1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
Wicked line prevails over the holy line!
Seems backwards!
The serpent is crushing the head of the promised child rather then the way that God promised in Gen3.15.
To make it seem even more impossible, Cain moves away and establishes his family line.
16 And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
When Cain does this, evil begins to multiply in his family line.
24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”
UNDER THE CURSE THINGS JUST KEEP GETTING WORSE AND WORSE!
It is in this dark time of multiplying evil that hope appears!
25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
What happens when you seek to do right?
God’s promise grows!
26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.
Raise your children right and generations are changed!
So now Seth’s line begins to grow and Godly people appear!
Rather than evil increasing, God’s goodness begins to increase!
As goodness grows, intimacy grows!
24 Enoch walked steadily with God. And then one day he was simply gone: God took him.
Thing to note: NOTHING CAN STOP THE PROMISE OF GOD!
When he says there will be a line that is good...
There will be!
God always brings good out of evil and always keeps his promises!
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
We talk and sing about the power of the blood of Jesus..
24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
The blood of Jesus is a better word!
Ables blood could only condemn Cain...
Jesus’ blood cries out on our behalf, advocating for us!
The blood of Jesus speaks a blessing over us rather than a curse!
When the blood is sprinkled over us
Sprinkled is an OT reference to the blood of the sacrifice being sprinkled on the Mercy Seat
In the NT the blood is applied though baptism in his Name
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
1 Peter 3:21 (KJV 1900)
21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us...
Why is baptism so important - if you don’t have the blood applied to your life there is no one to advocate for you!
All of a sudden 1Tim2.5 seems really important!
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
This is why the prophet Habakkuk said in
14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, As the waters cover the sea.
Jesus puts an end to the curse of death for us and gives us the promised blessing of life with God!
