Paul was reluctant to tell his readers about his unique experience, so that it might not be seen as boasting. However, if he needed to boast, he wanted to boast about the Lord and not his own experiences in being shown revelations and visions. To keep Paul humble, the Lord gave him a thorn in the flesh.
