1.2 Current Study’s Overview
1.2 Current Study’s Overview
As we come to chps. 22-23… we continue to look at some of the Civil Laws…
These laws are not meant to deal with every situation in life… but general principles regarding life…
There are 8 things we want to look at in Ch. 22 and 5 things in chp. 23...
1. The Law Regarding Thieves Vs. 1-4
1. The Law Regarding Thieves Vs. 1-4
If you steal something you must repay more than what you stole… this was to deter stealing…
If you kill a thief at night no problem, its dark, there is no help, you can’t identify him…
but if you kill him during the day your guilty… because the thief can be identified, there is more help available…
APPLICATION: And we’ve come so far from this… there are cases where a thief has broken into a house, hurt himself and sued the owner & won…
ILLUSTRATION: I looked up on the internet about thieves breaking in and getting hurt and then suing the homeowner and winning. And this is what the website said:
“These cases show that it is possible for a thief to sue the owner of a house and win, even if the thief was trespassing at the time of the injury. This is because homeowners have a duty to keep their property safe for all visitors, including trespassers. If a homeowner fails to do so, and a trespasser is injured as a result, the homeowner may be liable for the trespasser's injuries.”
So guys, you have to make sure your property is save for a thief to break in and steal your stuff.
However, if a thief is injured by a hazard that the homeowner knew about and failed to fix, the thief may be able to sue the homeowner for their injuries. For example, if a thief breaks into a house and is injured by a broken step, the thief may be able to sue the homeowner if the homeowner knew about the broken step and failed to fix it.
If you are a homeowner, it is important to take steps to make your property safe for visitors. This includes fixing any hazards that you know about, such as broken steps or faulty electrical outlets.
By taking these steps, you can help to protect yourself from being sued by a thief who is injured while breaking into your house.
How about taking steps to protect yourself and your family from the actual thief!?
APPLICATION: This is why we need God’s word amen?
The further away we drift from God the crazier we get.
2. The Law Regarding Property Damage Vs. 5-6
2. The Law Regarding Property Damage Vs. 5-6
Simple, Restore what you damaged…
Restitution Definition: To make a payment to someone for a loss incurred for which one is responsible.
3. The Law Regarding Safe Deposits Vs. 7-13
3. The Law Regarding Safe Deposits Vs. 7-13
If someone entrusts something to you, your responsible for it… take care of it, watch over it as if it were yours.
Turn with me to - Because there we see that the Lord has entrusted us with certain responsibilities and we need to make sure we take care of it...
14 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. 16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. 18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. 19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ 23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ 24 “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’ 26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. 29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
4. The Law Regarding Borrowing Vs. 14-15
4. The Law Regarding Borrowing Vs. 14-15
If you borrowed it & you broke it… you fix it… unless the owner came with it for hire…
5. The Law Regarding The Bride Price Vs. 16-17
5. The Law Regarding The Bride Price Vs. 16-17
Entice Definition - It means to seduce, to persuade someone to engage in sexual activity.
so this law was implemented by God to protect women, in the case If a man seducing a virgin who was not betrothed to sin with him.
This man would then be obligated to marry her and to pay the regular dowry or the bride price.
Because if a man seduces a virgin and does not marry her but leaves her, the chances of that woman to be married and loved by another man would be extremely low.
During this time, sex before marriage was frowned upon and would often times lead to a woman being ostracized.
This law would provide some degree of protection to the woman when it comes to finances and society.
So the man would be obligated to marry her and pay the bride price or "mohar". Which was a customary payment made by the groom or his family to the bride's family.
The bride price was money but also included land, livestock, or other valuable commodities.
This would show the bride’s family that the groom could take care of her.
APPLICATION: Which by the way me personally, is why I have such a high standard for potential men wanting to marry my daughters.
I want to know what value this man has for not only my daughter but for my whole family. But that is just me speaking, my own convictions.
This is interesting because the father’s rights are also acknowledged here. which is implied at the beginning of Vs. 17.
So if the father refused to give his daughter in marriage, to the man, he still had to pay the “bride-price” to the father, since the possibility that the daughter would ever marry was extremly low.
IM SPEAKING AS A FATHER
APPLICATION: I think the application for us powerful and is for both men and women.
Today, these customs have changed, but the underlying principles remain relevant.
The 'bride price' could be metaphorically understood as the degree of respect, commitment, and sacrifice a man is willing to offer the girl.
It could also imply time spent getting to know each other, establishing a relationship based on mutual trust and understanding.
It speaks to the man's ability to show to the woman and her family that he is prepared to take responsibility and is committed to the relationship for the long term.
Girls, don’t be seduced or enticed by boys to sleep with them without them proving to you it is God’s will.
If they really love you, they’d put a ring on it.
APPLICATION: Boys, what do you have to offer?
6. The Law Regarding Capital Crimes Vs. 18-20
6. The Law Regarding Capital Crimes Vs. 18-20
Here we have three capital crimes in addition to murder: Sorcery or witch craft, sexual intercourse with animal, and idolatry.
7. The Law Regarding The Needy Vs. 21-27
7. The Law Regarding The Needy Vs. 21-27
For the first time in Scripture we’re told God is Gracious… the point is simple, since God is gracious so too should we… we should be gracious to others…
35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.
8. The Law Regarding Basic Principles Vs. 28-31
8. The Law Regarding Basic Principles Vs. 28-31
Reverence Vs. 28 - Revere God & Rulers… Rom.13:1 be in subjection… no authority except from God.
Romans 13:1
First Fruits Vs. 29-30 - it all belongs to God so don’t delay in giving it to Him… hold it with an open hand.
Holiness Vs. 31 - being set apart for the Lord,
15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”
