Jonah Prays from the Depths of the Sea

Psalm 69:1-2 “Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me.”
Psalm 42:7 “Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me.”
Psalm 69:14-15 “Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me.”
“See how good it is to be ready in the scriptures; Jonah, when he could make no use of his Bible, by the help of his memory furnished himself from the scripture with a very proper representation of his case.” — Matthew Henry

Looking Upon the Temple Again

Psalm 31:22 “I had said in my alarm, “I am cut off from your sight.” But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to you for help.”
Psalm 139:7-10 “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”
Notice the connection between verses 4 and 7.
1 Kings 8:38-40 “whatever prayer, whatever plea is made by any man or by all your people Israel, each knowing the affliction of his own heart and stretching out his hands toward this house, then hear in heaven your dwelling place and forgive and act and render to each whose heart you know, according to all his ways (for you, you only, know the hearts of all the children of mankind), that they may fear you all the days that they live in the land that you gave to our fathers.”
Ephesians 6:17 “and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,”
Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
John 17:17 “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”
Psalm 119:67 “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word.”

Salvation Belongs to the Lord

Discuss the futility of trusting in idols.
1 Kings 18:27 “And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.””
Look to the Lord for salvation.
Psalm 3:8 “Salvation belongs to the Lord; your blessing be on your people! Selah”
Psalm 68:20 “Our God is a God of salvation, and to God, the Lord, belong deliverances from death.”
Psalm 37:39-40 “The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; he is their stronghold in the time of trouble. The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.”
Jonah 1:17 “And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”
Jeremiah 17:14 “Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise.”
Isaiah 59:1-2 “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.”
Micah 7:19 “He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.”
Jonah 2:10 “And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.”
