Peters Commitment

Peter has seen Jesus heal people
Seen Jesus cast out demons
He has been semi-following Jesus
bus has not yet become a true believer
Peter knows that there is something special about Jesus
Maybe Peter knows that Jesus is the Messiah
but Peter still has not realized that Jesus is God
Peter does not realize the Holiness of Jesus
He sees Jesus as a man
a man from God
the next ruler of Israel as the Messiah maybe
but he does not see Jesus as
Isaiah 6:1–4 LSB
In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is Yahweh of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory.” And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called out, while the house of God was filling with smoke.
or like John saw Him in Revelation
Revelation 1:12–16 LSB
Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash. And His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters, and having in His right hand seven stars, and a sharp two-edged sword which comes out of His mouth, and His face was like the sun shining in its power.
Peter has not had his eyes opened to who Jesus really is
Jesus is going to give Peter the calling of his life
Peter is already a professional fisherman
and on this day he probably thinks that this will be it for the rest of his life
Peter has all the gear, boats etc.
a lobster man does not go into this profession lightly the cost to get set up is the
hundred thousand s gear boat license
it is a commitment for life
Peter has made this commitment to be a fisherman for his livelihood
Peter is going to meet God/ Jesus for the first time
Read Luke 5 1-11
Pray

The Providence of God

The Providence of God
the act of providing, or governing the universe By the Sovereign King
God is not passive He does not let the universe just go
He controls every aspect of everything.  nothing happens by chance or outside His providence
Nothing happens outside of the sovereign kings say so
so lets look at the account in this passage
V 1 Now it happened not a specific time
but the perfect time
the crowd was pressing...
listening to the Word of God/ God speaking
Lake Gennasaret / sea of Galilee
the people was pressing Jesus right into the water
And there just happened to be 2 boats nearby
V 2 with some random fishermen mending their nets from fishing last night
V 3 Jesus got into one of the boats which by just coincidence was Simons / Peters boat
what the sermon was we don’t know
Peter is probably not really listening.
he has been up all night
hes still needs to mend on his nets to be ready for going out again that night
he has not been to bed yet
so he is probably tired and cranky. and irritable
the events of last night
and the events of this morning
has Jesus and Peter in the boat together alone
to set up the next scene going fishing

Let’s Go Fishing

V 4 go out into the deep
Peter is already tired from fishing all night
and the carpenter wants to go fishing
the nets are clean ready to be put away for the day
if I throw them in I will have to start all over again
V 5 Peter gives his answer
Master a respectful leadership title
the fish are not there I know we tried all night
we tried every way we know how to catch fish but
But at your word
after all you did heal my mother in law
it’s the least I could do
I will humor you and take you out in the boat
and I will cast out the net
Peter had reasons not to cast out the net
But he did, He obeyed what Jesus said to do
V 6 the nets began to break
Jesus God, in his almighty power herded 100s of fish into the nets
The all knowing Jesus Knew where the fish were
V 7 the other boat was called

Peters Eyes Are Opened

Peter the one who has been semi following Jesus
who has seen the miracles
who has heard the teachings
who has been around Jesus for a year
the miracles have wowed him, like everybody else
His Sabbath learning have taught him that God is Holy, all powerful, all knowing,
The scales have been dropped from the eyes of Peter
he now realizes that Jesus is the creator God
Jesus is all powerful, all knowing
Peter has seen God’s glory
it is what Isaiah realized when he was in the presence of the almighty
Isaiah 6:5 LSB
Then I said, “Woe is me, for I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, Yahweh of hosts.”
and what John realized about himself when he was in Heaven in his vision
Revelation 1:17 LSB
And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not fear; I am the first and the last,
V 8 Peter saw in that moment the face of the Almighty
saw the face of Holiness
and realized the sinfulness of his sin
Exalting Jesus in Luke Jesus Has a Holiness that Exposes Us to Ourselves (Luke 5:1–11)

John Calvin wrote in The Institutes of Christian Religion, “Man never attains to a true knowledge of himself until he has contemplated the face of God, and come down after such contemplation to look into himself

He realizes he deserves hell for his sin
and his heart acknowledges that he is in the presence of a holy God
Go away from me I cannot be in you presence
the sin exposed in me by your presence is more than I could bear
V 9-10
James and John were also amazed
Don’t be terrified
at the moment that they recognize their sin Jesus draws them nearer
and gives them an eternal commission
to capture dead people and bring them to life
that is what happens every time someone is saved
When God the Holy Spirit reveals to us the sinfulness of our sin
Jesus gave Peter Andrew, James and John their part in the Kingdom.

And They Left Everything

V 11 the biggest ever catch of their lives
they could have said Wow Jesus with you as our partner we could be rich
but that was the last thing on their minds
they left everything
just walked away from the boatloads of fish
to follow Jesus
Following Jesus requires an ultimate commitment
When Jesus calls us to follow Him we partake in bringing glory to God
we have the greatest calling on earth
but we have to be willing to give up everything
we may not have to give up everything but we must be willing
The Lord’s mission for us must be the top priority
