The Altars of Abraham
and Genesis chapter 12 or going to continue and installment number three, I think it is William. It was so good last week that have Doctor Thomas and for our anniversary and thank you for your kindness and in the cards and encouraging notes, that you have given to us. We appreciate it so much and I'm we're going to try to put a thank you, note in our new bulletin system that we have next week. Hopefully just to thank you for being. So I just to think of us it's been a wonderful 11 years and it's been a fast yet. Slow 11 years. You know what I have found about pastoring the day please go long but the years go, short is kind of how pastoring goes you like on Sunday, like, where did it go. But you feel like you're burning the midnight oil while you're doing it and yet time goes fast. So it what a privilege it is to be at this church. You have no idea how much we love you. The altars of Abraham, we talked about the first family altar. And then, we talked about the first altar in the word of God. And you can't talk about altars without going into the subject of Abraham. And so today, we're going to deal with this one and then our next installment with the last of Abraham's altars. But I want to give you the altars of Abraham, 28 of these aren't necessarily all the altars, but I've taken some and put them into a category. So that you can understand that principle about altars in the Bible, especially altars in the Old Testament. Alters represented a person's walk and relationship with God. Everybody understand that say Amen. You and I do not have to build altars. Now in fact, if we built an altar and we sacrificed and offering on an altar and kill the lamb and put it on an altered, that would be sacrilegious. It would literally be blasphemy to the Lord now, but in the Old Testament, that wasn't the case. In the Old Testament, you have to understand that God came to man and God spoke with me and at times, and God impressed upon individuals Hearts, but man really had no way to God. And so Alters represented man's attempt to communicate with God. Another words, an altar would represent worship and altar would represent forgiveness. We've gone through all this already, but I always see an Abraham. You can watch the flow of his life in every step of his life. Every major decision, every major Milestone can be traced back. To an altar. And so today is going to be somewhat informative because if we're going to do a series on altars, I want you to kind of understand about this. So we're going to pray, Genesis chapter 12, As you have found it, I want you to look at first six. The Bible says that Abraham passed through the land under the place of Sikkim under the plane. of Mora and the Canaanite was, then in the land, the Canaanite people and the Lord appeared unto Abraham and said, a Jedi seed. Will I give this land? And they're building an altar unto, the Lord who appeared. Unto him. Number one this morning before we pray, we're going to be talkin about what I call the relationship altar. This was his first altar. The relationship alter because the story of Abraham really doesn't start in Genesis chapter 12, the listen here. the story of Abraham really starts in Acts chapter 7,
Abraham in the Old Testament, his story really starts all the way over in the New Testament that spray Lord, I love you. Lord, I Thank You For All You've Done. Lord I know Satan's attempt to make my throat so bad. It's done. Well these last few days and Lord I expected it this morning but give our people Grace. May it not distract them too too much. And Lord, I pray that you would touch my throat. Courthouse. Do they hear without a preacher? It's a lord, we want people to hear clearly. So I pray that you would help it. Lord, Ezra preacher word. We discussed the subject of Alters. We are reminded now that you our altar. Jesus, thank you for dying for us. Thank you for being the sacrifice for us. The Lord help us to glean and learn from this. In Jesus name, we pray Amen. The relationship alter. This was an altar that literally Abraham set up by an oak tree and what they call the Mora area. The story of Abraham does not begin in Genesis 12, it begins and acts 7. in fact, according to Joshua in the Book of Joshua, Sarah, which was Abraham's father was an idolator. God himself comes to Abraham. And Abraham was from and in a pagan family, not want you to see these verses so that you can see how the Bible kind of gives us an account of things and Acts chapter 7 that he's versus Abby on the screen. You're welcome to turn there and follow if you will, but I want you to hang on with me just a little bit this morning because you're going to learn some things this morning. On the subject of altars Acts chapter 7 verse 2. This is literally Steven talkin here and he said men Brethren and fathers. Parking. The god of Glory appeared unto our Father Abraham. When he was in Mesopotamia before he dwelt in Quran and said unto him, get the out of the country. And from thy Kindred, and come into the land, which I shall show thee. Then gave me out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Quran. And from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land where Indian out. Well, I'm looking for a spot. And he gave him, none inheritance in it. No, not so much as the set his foot on. Yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession that means Abraham showed up, didn't have any inheritance there Abraham showed up, didn't he didn't own one thing but God had already said, I'm going to give this land to you. Got it promise. To God comes to Abraham when he is at home, living with his father. His father was a pagan idolatry. In fact, when they moved, when his father, Ray move to Corona Twitter, Lee was the center of moon worship. So, here's Abraham in a pagan environment, God shows up to Abraham and says, listen don't you get out of this land? I want you to go to this land. I'm going to, I'm going to give you this land as an inheritance, and I'm going to use you greatly. God comes to Abraham but Abraham doesn't do any thing, really good actually after 7. Verse 5 says, he had no possession. He had no CD didn't have children. He didn't have a son. For 6. And God spake on this wines, that his seed should sojourn in a Strange Land. And that they should bring them into bondage and entreat them. Evil, 400 years and the nation to whom they shall be in bondage. Will I judge said God. And after that show, they come forth and serve me in this place. God is sharing all this. Even about the children of Israel being in bondage in Egypt and he was Abraham living in a pagan house. For all, we know Abraham, might have been an idolater that we don't know. We don't know exactly when this took place but God said to Abraham, get out of this tree, leave this country and come to this land. I'm going to give it to you and Abraham did not go. So the Bible says years went by and then Abraham's dad Tara passed away. and when he passed away, then Abraham, Reminded himself of what God had said. God had appeared unto him. And then he began this journey and came to this land.
One more set of verses, before we get going, look at Genesis 12:1, it's on the screen for you. Now, the Lord had said, I'd Abraham get the out of the country and from thy Kindred in front of my father's house unto a land that I will show thee. And I will make you great nation, and I will bless thee and make thy name, great. And thou shalt be a blessing. And I will bless them that bless thee and curse them in the car seat and indeed shall all the families of the earth. Be blessed noticed this so Abraham puts up this altar in Genesis chapter 12. In this is what I call the relationship. Alter notice number one, hits, a relationship that begins with a promise. The whole relationship between Abraham and God began with a promise that you look up here at me your relationship with God. Also began with a promise
Look at me. Abraham didn't show up to God. God, showed up to Abraham.
And you made a promise you know God has given you some promises do you know there would be no reason for salvation at what was the promise the scripture? The promise was that man didn't want God is their King. They wanted a man is a king and so God gave them what they wanted in. Now they had the chance to the law and then we come through the law and they couldn't follow the law and they couldn't keep the logs. They reminded us. That man is not able to save himself. But all through the Old Testament, it is prophesied that a messiah would come.
I promise that he will come and then you get to the Book of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and we're told that the Messiah King That he lived. That he kept himself clean and sinless. That he willingly sacrificed himself on the cross. It was promised to us that he would come and he came the only reason you and I have a relationship with God is because of Jesus Christ. And the only reason we have relationship with Jesus Christ is because it all started. With a promise.
That he loved this. But he would come. But he would die for us. That he would be the sacrificial lamb for us. Look at me and he kept his promise. Abraham's relationship started with a promise a long time ago, God said, Hey listen, I'm going to give you this land for an inheritance. I'm going to make your name great. I'm going to pass this down here, Generations. Abraham didn't do one thing. His dad died. Do you know the in Genesis chapter 12 Abraham is already 75 years old? Imagine what he could have done for God as a Young Man. But time wasted because God, gave a promise but Abraham didn't respond. Look at me. God might give a promise but you have to respond. A relationship that begins with a promise. Notice number two, a relationship that begins with obedience. Obedience. Can I tell you something? You don't have a relationship with God if you don't obey God said, go to this land, I have this land, got all these wonderful things. I'm going to give it to you as inheritance. I'm going to take care. I'm going to meet your need. I'm going to bless you but that doesn't happen until you obey
To Genesis chapter 12 Abraham. Finally gets there. God already promised, but you didn't do anything about it until dad died.
I wonder what needs to die in your life.
To you'll finally obey.
I wonder what needs to be put to death in your life. God's ask the God's big but there's just some things in the way and until they're gone. We're never going to obey.
But dad died. And Abraham finally shows up in Genesis chapter 12 and there he builds an altar. A relationship alter our relationship that was birthed with a promise, a relationship that begins with obedience.
may I say something interesting here, most of the people in the Bible that God called where young people young individuals, but Abraham was 75 years old now. Temperature. What is that? Tell me stops calling.
No, I know. This is odd. You don't hear this a lot. But you know, that there could be individuals even right here in this church in your 30s, in your 40s and your 50s. Possibly in your 60s. Maybe in your 70s. thank God, it's called And you've never obey.
Tuesday night of our Revival at a young man here named Ben, right? I've known Ben. His dad was pastor Wayne Wright. I'm actually doing Revival at their Church of Sunday, Wednesday, Revival next week. I'm going to be preaching here in Sunday morning at 10, and I got to be done in enough time to drive to get the other side of Greensboro to preach their 11:00 service. So you want to be here next week. You were going to get out of church very fast.
So, you got all excited.
Forget that altar, right?
Brother Ben's dad, Wainwright Pastor McConnell Road, Baptist Church for years and passed away in. About a year after you passed away. If you remember, we were still in our other building in. His widow came. This is right. I don't know how many of you remember her, we support her monthly. She came over and she was in her late sixties at this time.
Husband is now gone on to be with the Lord and I guess she's probably looking at possible retirement but she said, you know, God's calling me to Israel. To work with Jewish people. How do you tell a woman in her? Late sixties, who serve God? Her entire life is as his wife and now she's willing to go to Israel to uproot Lee family, grandkids everything and go, serve the Jewish, people, and Israel. How do you tell a woman like that? No, We support her, amen.
I called you. Play preacher that ship sailed, are you sure?
You sure about that. God calls people. No matter what age they are. May I see this, nothing about your pastor, everyone's any wanted you to leave our church. But even if God called you to do something, I would do nothing but get behind you and support you and thank God that you answered his call.
the relationship that begins with the promise, A relationship that is built. On obedience notice, thirdly, a relationship that is bonded in Fellowship.
When Abraham finally reach Canaan. Genesis chapter 12 verse 5 & 6 that we read.
Why can't I want to read it to you again in verse six and Abraham passed through the land under the place? Of Sikkim under the plane of Mora. He finally made it. And the Canaanite was then in the land of the Lord appeared unto Abraham and said unto thy seed. Once again, Abraham on tonight seed, even though you don't have a c h, i c, i will give this land. And there he building an altar. Unto the Lord. A relationship that is bonded. In Fellowship now, you look at me, want you to get this? Why did Abraham build that alter their, there's a number of reasons.
It's a relationship. Altered Abraham. This relationship began with the promise but it was never consummated until he obeyed. Hello, God has given him the land but that didn't help Abraham out until he went.
So now leaving him consummate, the relationship by obedience. and when he gets there, he builds an altar. Why did he build an altar? Let me tell you why. As far as we can tell before he bought a house before he build a dwelling before he build anything.
Years ago, God had come to Abraham, gave him a promise, God, waited all this time. Goes Abraham comes to the land. God comes to him again, Abraham, I will give this land to your seed. But any brand building off of here, why this is the first altar that Abraham ever erected. Why? because now, Abraham, God had come to him two times already. Now Abraham wanted to go to God. You would alter Azar, it's Fellowship. You seen the Old Testament. Now Abraham wanted to communicate with God. God has been communicating with Abraham. I'm going to bless your seed. I'm going to give you this land. But Abraham never communicated back.
Can I ask you something? How much do you fellowship with God?
Here's what's interesting in 2023. If you've been saved by the grace of God, you don't have to go out and build you, a big rock alter, you don't have to go find a lamb, you don't have to slay that lamb and sacrifice him on an altar just so that you can talk and fellowship and get clean enough so that you can talk to God. Are you looking up here at me? Because Jesus was the sacrifice, because Jesus was the sacrificial lamb, because Jesus was the last sacrifice ever needed. Our sins have been you, and I now can just talk to God.
You see an altar was a sign here that Abraham now wants it to Fellowship. this at all, been God coming to him but now Abraham, Wanted to go to God.
Look at me. You and God will never bond without Fellowship.
You know, you can be shaved. But not close.
This altar that Abraham puts up the first altar. He wants to establish a relationship. Look at me up until now and it all been one-sided. God, making the effort. To get to Abraham now Abraham. Wants to make the effort to communicate with God.
That's what an altar is. You and I don't have to build a physical to look at me. Jesus, the book of Hebrews says, is our altar.
Is it was a preacher. Is it sacrilegious that we haven't altered here?
No, it's not sacrilegious. That we have an ultra here. Because this is not an altar to sacrifice for your sins. That's been done. Jesus did that? If you're here and you never been safe today. You can come to know Jesus as your personal savior. He loves you. He wants to forgive you of your sin. He wants to save you. He's provided it for you. This is an altar for Fellowship. This is an altar for forgiveness. To restore that Fellowship Lord? I'm sorry. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us. Consequences.
A relationship. That was birth for the promise. A relationship. That was built by obedience. A relationship that is bonded. in Fellowship, notice number for A relationship that is built on faith.
You see what Abraham put up that alter. Why did he put up that altar? She will preacher you just said because he could communicate with God. Exactly. But why did he put the altar there? Look-at-me altars were not portable.
Did you hear me? Altars were not portable. You can get you a little portable grill. You can have a portable chair. You can even pull pull a portable house called a camper. it all sounds really good to me right now, to be honest with you,
But when a man erected an altar, he didn't just pick that up and take it with him when he left.
That altar stain. What was Abraham saying? God, I don't own one thing here yet. I don't even have a seed to pass this way into that. You say, you're going to give me and I'm going to pass it down to my seat. So I don't have the land yet and I don't have the siege yet. I don't have a son. But God, I'm going to put the altar up right here, and this is going to be permanent. Why? Because I'm here because you told me I'm here because you said, you were giving it to me. I'm here because you said that I would possess this land and that I would pass this down to my seed. This altar was built by Pink. It started with a promise. Now, Abraham is brave enough to believe it.
What kind of face do you have?
Have you put down your roots? Spiritually.
Do we got a test to see which way religion is going?
or do we build us an altar and say got you gave me a promise And I'm putting down my roots right here. I'm doing what you said. This was an altar built. By faith.
It is God, I believe what you said. I trust it. By faith. Notice last. It is a relationship based on worship.
A relationship based on worship. Abraham put up this altar to begin a relationship. It's the relationship alter. It's the first one he had put up. God had tried to start a relationship with Abraham years ago but hey bruh ham is finally ready to make it a relationship. Show me build, an altar for the fellowship. He built an altar for the face. Any bills and alter. Because he wants to worship.
Alters are always a sign of sacrificial worship.
This was an altar by an oak tree. Mora. And alter indicates a close relationship. A personal relationship between the one who builds the Altar and the one who receives the sacrifice
Pray for him. This first altar represented the worship. Given to the one. Who had appeared to him? Years ago.
A relationship altar. Altar number one, Can I ask you something? Have you established a relationship Ultra? Do you have a personal Walk With Jesus Christ?
For the relationship never grew until he obeyed. Until he showed up until he began a relationship until he Fellowship until he had faith in. What got it said. Until he worshipped
Alter number two.
The retirement alter. From here. Like okay, now we're talkin I like this one.
The retirement alter. notice, if you will be on the screen for you, Genesis chapter 12, I told you were going to deal with it this weekend. And next week, notice, if you would leave a state, And he removed from fence onto a mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent having Bethel on the west. And I on the East and there he builded an altar unto the Lord. This is the altar at Bethel and called upon the name of the Lord and Abram journeyed going on, still toward the South Let me see what's going on here. Looking for his sake and he removed from fence onto a mountain. Can I tell you something interesting? This word removed In the Hebrew is a word for retirement.
Abraham is already in his late. Seventies now, He leaves that first altar where he was in war and he goes to Bethel. And where he camps at Bethel. He's got, I'm on the one side. And that's the one the other side. Bethel means House of God. I means pile of rubble.
Joe Abraham decides to build an altar.
Between his past. And his future.
It's a reminder that my life was a pile of rubble. But it's been changed. By God.
Abraham comes here to retire. This is where he's going to stop. This is not where he's going to take it easy. How many of, you know, there's one thing you can't and shouldn't retire from and that's walking with God.
so, he puts his Ultra God, you've been good to me, you brought me to this land, that's what my life was. That's what my life will be. God has brought me to Bethel.
And this is where I'm going to spend my ears. But then something happens. A horrible, horrible famine comes into the land. He's got our eye on one side, and he's got Bethel on the other side. Look at me. But when the famine came Abraham panicked. You should have never left. God said, leave your country.
And he said, leave your relatives. How many you like that one?
I got some here this morning so I got to be very nice.
How many years? Sometimes the lands harder to leave in the relatives? Thank you, I appreciate that.
Look at me. God said listen leisureland, leave your relatives. You come here, I'll bless you but when Sam and hit look at me instead of Abraham trusting. God. Converse 9. the Bible says, he went South He went South toward. Egypt.
You say was that a mistake?
It was a big one. You won't believe what all happened on that Journey. Because of famine. You got to be careful just because problems come in your life. Don't you? Leave church. Don't you leave God's word? Don't you forget God's promises. God said you come here, I'll take care of you but he panicked. He was older. He was in retirement age. He thought and he still didn't have a son. Do salmon. Come look at me, folks, will of God's going to keep his promise and I'm going to be able to hand this land down to my see that I don't have yet. I've got to stay alive.
So, I need to go somewhere and get some food. A lack of trust. And what happens when he goes all the way down to Egypt he gets and all kinds of problems.
All kinds of nests.
Ultra number 3. Look at you would at and I love this. Genesis 13:1 words on the screen for you. Almost done actually.
I call it the return alter.
The establishes, finally, a relationship offer. And everyone of us have to do that. Nothing happens in your life until you start a relationship. With Christ. It all hinges on that relationship. You let that relationship go. You got problems from then on that. Did he come to the retirement? Alter this where I'm going to stay put and trust God but he didn't. Trust God. So now if you want us to Genesis 13 and Abraham went up out of Egypt, that's where he ran to. and his wife and all that he had and lot with him into the South and Abraham was very rich in cattle and silver and gold and he went on his journeys from the south even to wear Bethel. Under the place, where is tins had been? At the beginning. Between Bethel and I. Now, look at verse 4. Under the place of the altar. Which he had me there at first. And their Abraham called on the name of the Lord and lot also which went with Abraham had flocks and herds and Tents, and the land was not able to Bear them that they might dwell together. Look at me. The Returned alter.
You see Abraham start for the relation of all Denny, move to the retirement alter. I'm going to trust God with my life, and he doesn't Any runs to the South and now guess what? He comes, right back to where he should have stayed the entire time and he comes right back to that altar. And he returns. To the Lord. But we have a problem. This verse says, when he comes back,
He comes back with what? His nephew. You see if Abraham had stayed where he was supposed to stay. God said, come to the land, leave your relatives, don't bring any of your family and lock comes back with Abraham. Babraham have never left. He would have never brought back a lot. If Abraham had never left the never made enemies. Because of Sarah remember the whole thing he told them that Sarah was his sister and then they saw him being romantic with his sister. And the King figure out. You're lying to me. And then he got in trouble at all. This stuff happened, why? Because he left Where God had put him. so, he returns But some damage had been done. Now watch with him. Now God has this land that he's promised Abraham and what happens? Abraham has sheep. A lot has sheet, Abraham has cattle. Lot has, has cattle. And they can't get along them. The land can hold both of them soap Abraham says. Alright lot you choose where you want to go. In the Bible says that lot chose the good land. That was the land that God had promised to Abraham. But now it's going to lot now, it's going to a guy that should have never been there from the start.
Joy, Burnham takes the other piece of land and you all know what happens. Lot goes closer and closer to Sodom.
and when it's all said and done, Lot's wife. It's turned into a pillar of salt. Watch children are all killed. What takes off? And now Abraham has the land. Finally. God. I promised. The Returned alter. No, maybe there's some here today that need to return. To the altar, you used to worship at?
Maybe you need to return to the relationship with God. you used to have, as we close this morning number for We see the renewing alter. The renewing alter. Genesis chapter 13. All this has happened and transpired. Now, what a mess Look at verse 14. Abraham knows he's blowing it now, all this mess because he brought a lot and he was supposed to bring him at all.
Now, he's discouraged. Now, he's disappointed in himself.
He comes back to Beth Orton. He's done the damage. Look What God Says, in verse 14. The Lord said unto Abraham. After that lot was separated from him. You should have never been there in the first place. What did God say? After all this mess was finally taken care of Abraham lift up now. Zion I And look from the place. Where in Belmar, northward and Southward and Eastward and Westward. That means Everywhere, by the way.
For all the land which thou seest to thee? Will I give it seems like I've heard that before.
And to thy seed forever and I will make thy seed as the dust of the Earth. We were 17, he says arise walk through the land. And the length of it. You see Abraham comes back to ejected, I've blown it. The land still wasn't his, he still didn't have a son but God still promised and God comes to him again. I need to build an altar here.
God says number one. Refocus your vision. He said, hey man, are you look around? You get your eyes off of lots. Get your eyes off of your mistakes. Get your eyes off of your sin, and you start looking at what I have given you.
Quit looking at what you lost. Look at what I'm doing.
We need some people this morning for you to get your eyes off of what you've lost. You need to get your eyes off, the mistakes you've made and you need to be reminded of the promises of God. He says refocus your vision number to he says, Remember My Vow He said this is Lynn. I told you. I will get it. I know you blew it. I know you didn't trust me. I know you ran off and made mistakes. But remember what? I promised you. For the umpteenth time.
I'm going to give you this way in if it's the last thing I do.
Notice number 3, respond with victory. Arrives. Don't let your head get down, don't get all depressed. Curl up in your little cuckoo. I'm self-loathing. Get up arise. Give this land. I'm going to give you. Guess what happens?
Sarah comes into the 10.
Abraham. I got some news. I'm pregnant.
By the way, can I see something that all this fighting we have going on in the Middle East and you need to be here tonight to hear for the Saints testimony. Where I'm talking about is where he's flying out to tomorrow. What a Ministry. He has in Egypt in this area, but no stem.
Sarah gets pregnant. But you know why? We have all this fighting in the Middle East, because when Abraham went down to Egypt left, God's trust went down there, he didn't just bring back lot. He brought back a maid named Hagar.
Sarah finally gets pregnant. They thought that she's never going to get pregnant. So Sarah says this. And why don't you go have a child with my hand mate? So he gets up and then Sarah finally has a child and now Hagar child doesn't like Sarah's child.
And they're still fighting about it in the Middle East. What a mistake? To leave God's altar.
God says already made him look around. I'm going to give it to you. Refocus your vision. Remember My Vow? Arise go out there. and claim the victory I've already given You say Okay preacher, I got the message and we're done for today. My X done.
but next Sunday, we're going to deal with the last all. What I called the requirement. Alter. This. See the god of promise. He named Isaac. God's getting ready to ask Abraham to take this child. That he's waited. So long. And put him. On all of all things. To put him on an altar. Next Sunday, the altars Are they bring you say preacher or what? How does this fit my life? I don't know. I really don't know. I'm giving you the Bible. I don't know if you need to be in a relationship today. I don't know if you need to return today. I don't know if God needs to renew you today. I don't know. But all I know is one thing. God's word never returns void. Lord, I love you today. I thank you for all that you've done.
Or has around their eyes are closed today.
The relationship altar. Started with a promise. You've been given a promise.
There has been their eyes closed. So folks, that made their way up to an alter. How about you today?
Do you know that you're saved? Do you know that, you know, that you know, that you're saved? But there has been on the rise close to your friend. Jesus loves you, he died for you, we talked about it today, right? Where you
You can pray. And Trust Jesus. Admit, you're a sinner. Believe what the Bible says that he came that he died. Put your faith and trust in him.
It's about eyes are closed on stand all over the building. If you would
well, it has about her eyes are closed. Come step out and come, if you need.
The relationship altar.
What about the retirement alter? Well, I'm just going to trust Jesus. And then famine comes
Seabreacher. I did that. Maybe it's time for the return.
Come back to where you need to be.
Just maybe.
You need a renewing alter. Refocus your vision.
Lord, I love you.
So sorry, Lord that my throat's. Not been good. I know it's not easy to listen to
Lord, I pray that your word. Found its way.
To those who need it. The most
Pray that you help.
Lord, we can make an ultra out of our car. We can make an altar at our desk. At work. We can make an altar anywhere we go because of Jesus Christ. We can be renewed, we can return.
We can build a relationship wherever we go.
