Funeral Sermon
Psalm 23:title–6 (KJV 1900): A Psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever
.1. Millions know and love this psalm ,….. David pinned perfect poetic phrasing in an effort to describe the reality of his Relationship with GOD ….
a. The words of this Psalm … inspire, instruct, and comfort
I. He Speaks of a Relationship with God—v. 1a
A. In the interim vs 1 …..He was saying, “I belong to God”
B. He was just a common man
1. This says that a relationship is possible for any person
2. It is possible for anyone to be a Christian—2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not delaying the promise, as some consider slowness, but is being patient toward you, because he does not want any to perish, but all to come to repentance.
II. He Speaks of his Relationship with GOD
And How the relationship impacted every area of his life…..
David spoke of how his Relationship with GOD allowed all of his…
1. Physical needs to be met—“not want” v1
(Nurturing-love & Nourishment -food) Psalm 37:25 “I was a youth, but I am now old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children ⌊begging for⌋ bread.”
All of my Physical needs are met as a result of my Relationship with GOD!
Philippians 4:19 “And my God will fulfill your every need according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
2. Emotional needs met—“still waters” v2
David paints this perfect picture because as a shepherd he knew the importance of leading the sheep besides still waters to quench there thirst, … because babbling waters will fray the sheep and they would be disquieted and dissuaded from quenching there thirst
and so for us when the currents of life
and the riptides of life
disquiet us emotionally , this is when GOD leads us besides still waters
Still waters are when GOD affirms TO ME that “ALL THINGS (according to Romans 8:28) ARE WORKING TOGETHER, FOR MY GOOD”
IT AIN‘T ALRIGHT BUT IT’S GONNA BE ALRIGHT …..
Weeping may endure for a night ,… but Joy is coming in the morning
3. Spiritual needs met—“restoreth soul” v3
Some cuts run deep into the core of your soul and the only way you will experience the restoration of your soul is through spiritual connection
money
henesey
weed
that’s why David says in …
Psalm 42:1 “As a deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God.”
You need a spiritual connection
God use me to help somebody make a spiritual connection today…
for the sake of their soul
4. Living needs met—“paths of righteousness”3b
5. Deepest needs met—“shadow of death” v4
6. Total needs met—“table before me” v5
B. The relationship was not temporary—v. 6
III. He Speaks of an Eternal Relationship
A. Eternal dwelling place—v. 6b
B. Eternal well-being—v. 6a
C. This is a possibility for all who believe
D. Who of us can say, “The Lord is my shepherd”?
